The Nintendo Switch has officially been crowned the top-selling gaming console of 2019 and the mania for the popular device fully rolled over into the new decade — and then some.

Despite the device's popularity, the Switch was, until recently, available to shop at a myriad of retailers. However, given the shelter-in-place orders, it's become nearly impossible to find. In fact, a recent report from the Charlotte Observer found that gamers have been “panic-buying the Nintendo Switch like it’s toilet paper.”

The publication spoke with Bryan Mapes, an American gamer who admittedly, like many, resorted to video games for entertainment during weeks of lockdown. Mapes revealed that it was a struggle to even find one console since the quarantine took effect, but the gamer went through quite the hassle to find one.

“There were only two available in the entire 50-mile radius at Target,” he said. “So we had to go to one Target, buy the Switch, then buy Mario Kart at a different Target.”

Since the article was published on April 4, online retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop and Target have been consistently selling out of Nintendo Switches. The Observer added that, to satisfy their fix, several customers have even resorted to purchasing the consoles from third-party sellers on eBay, Facebook and even Craigslist.

While the Nintendo Switch Joy-Con console remains completely sold out across retailers, there seems to be hope as Game Stop, Adorama and B&H Photo-Video are offering a wide range of bundle sets in limited quantities. The available options include variations of the Nintendo Switch Lite (in several colors) and a selection of games, memory cards, accessories and more.
