When it comes to haircare, there’s usually two items you’ll find in people’s shower caddies: a shampoo and a conditioner. And while you might think that’s all you need for your regular hair maintenance, some swear by the power of a clarifying shampoo.
Clarifying shampoos pack a bigger punch than standard cleansers. According to Healthline, they’re made to give your hair a deep cleanse and remove excess hair buildup (a.k.a. all the gunk and residue that gets left behind from styling products.)
So it’s no surprise that the Ouai Detox Shampoo is something shoppers are excited about. Launched in April, the newest addition to the Ouai haircare line has already garnered a little over 1,500 loves at Sephora along with some stellar reviews.
While people may already love this shampoo because it’s yet another product from celebrity hairstylist Jen Atkin, it also has one noteworthy ingredient — apple cider vinegar.
Shop: Ouai Detox Shampoo, $30
For years, apple cider vinegar (ACV) has been used as a home remedy for beauty concerns, including cleansing hair — in fact, my own hairstylist has rinsed my hair with it on several occasions — and that’s partly because it’s believed to help prevent bacteria and restore the pH balance in your scalp, according to Healthline.
“When we add hair products, many of these attach to our hair by opening the cuticle slightly by making the hair more alkaline,” Pennsylvania-based board-certified dermatologist Erum Ilyas, MD, MBE, FAAD told Insider. “By using ACV, the normal acidity of our hair is restored and the product buildup resolves.”
Additionally, the Ouai Detox Shampoo contains keratin, which is a common treatment used in salons to strengthen your hair.
Although the shampoo contains ACV, a handful of reviewers raved about the shampoo’s scent.
“First of all, this smells so freaking amazing!!” one buyer wrote. “I wish they made it in perfume form. That being said, this shampoo is super thick and goes a long way. My hair felt super clean but you definitely need the conditioner to follow up with. Otherwise your hair may be left too dry.”
Another reviewer mentioned how “fresh” their scalp felt. “This has been a life saver with helping cleanse my hair from all of the dry shampoo I’ve been using in quarantine. Makes my scalp feel so fresh and light using it about once a week!”
However, it is worth noting that clarifying shampoos should be used occasionally. According to Healthline, they can “leave your hair feeling dry and dull” if you use them too often.
