I think there’s no denying that the beauty industry has a sustainability issue (just thinking of all the confetti stuffers commonly found in PR mailers gives me the chills).

Brands have made progress over the years, as they’ve realized the need for environmental sustainability — and, more importantly, consumers have properly aligned themselves with brands that hold the same moral and ethical values as they do.

This, of course, has its own set of challenges: The industry has a huge supply chain that would need intense refinement.

According to SparkNews, those challenges include the “sustainable sourcing of raw ingredients, energy consumption, waste management and carbon footprint of the whole production chain,” in addition to “biodegradability and lack of human and environmental toxicity and corporate social responsibility in terms of inclusion, fairness and equal opportunities.”

Shoppers are now more conscious than ever of brands that take a stand on the environment. A 2018 McKinsey & Business of Fashion study revealed that 66% of global millennials are willing to spend more on sustainable fashion brands, and beauty is not far behind.

In celebration of Earth Day 2020 — as well as all that’s happening in the world and the importance of taking care of our environment — we wanted to shine a light on a few beauty brands that are doing their part to ensure a cleaner, safer and more democratic world.


BLK + GRN is a marketplace connects Black people with natural lifestyles to high-quality, toxic-free brands that share in the brand’s mission of health, wellness and community cultivation. They offer a wide variety of items for those looking to add to their home, daily routine or even skincare regimens.


Lush has a pretty well-known environmental policy that the company shares publicly with its consumers. Not only does the brand offer bath bombs, bubble bars, massage bars and more with the option of no packaging, but its products are also vegan-friendly for the masses.


Epara believes “that ingredients Mother Nature has provided within the African continent is best suited for skin concerns of women of color,” according to its site. The brand not only supports local industries, co-ops and farmers, but its ingredients are also free from synthetic chemicals.

Tata Harper

The majority of Tata Harper Skincare’s packaging is made of glass — a decision the company made due to its recyclability and reuse options. The brand also uses 100 percent post-consumer materials as well as soy-based ink for printing.


Caudalie — other than providing great skincare products — is a member of the “1 percent for the Planet” network, which contributes 1 percent of its worldwide turnover to organizations helping to protect and help the environment. By 2021, the brand will have planted more than 8 million trees in 8 countries.


Ilia is a brand with ingredients and packaging centered around sustainability. With a focus on clean beauty, the brand explores this with “conscious, carefully-selected ingredients, and no compromises.” With sustainable packaging through the use of recycled aluminum, glass components and responsibly sourced paper, Ilia educates on the entire product life cycle to ensure items don’t end up in landfills.

Form Beauty

Form provides high-quality and enriching haircare products that are “thoroughly vetted to provide top performance without compromising,” according to its site.

PLANT Apothecary

PLANT Apothecary provides “certified organic, eco-friendly self care” through the use of high-quality organic essential oils and super-powered botanical ingredients, according to its site. The brand is also good for the earth with sustainable packaging!

The Honey Pot

The Honey Pot is the “first complete feminine care system that cleanses, protects, and balances your vagina,” according to the site. Its natural products include no chemicals, toxins, artificial fragrances or anything synthetic. All products are also biodegradable and cruelty-free.

Coloured Raine

Coloured Raine‘s mission has “always been to spread awareness of diversity through beauty and to embrace all aspects of color through unity.” The rand produces cruelty-free cosmetics that include lipsticks, eyeshadows, palettes, highlighters, eyelashes and more.
