We get it, you’re bored — you haven’t been able to get your hair done in weeks, and you’re tired of seeing your own same old face reflected in surfaces around the house all the time. It’s high time to change up your quarantine look.
But, rather than resorting to spontaneous bangs (PUT THE SCISSORS DOWN, NOW) or a drastic all-over color job, consider first a little bit of experimenting with dip dye.
Adding a pop of color to the ends of your hair is simple, inexpensive and easy to fix if you ultimately decide you don’t like it.
Here’s how it’s done:
1. Pick a product and a color

We recommend the Moroccanoil Color Depositing Mask, which is available for $28. Coloring your hair can leave it feeling dry and frizzy, but this product doubles as a deep conditioner to give your locks an extra surge of moisture.
2. Gather your supplies

You’ll need gloves, a bowl for the dye and a paint brush for blending.
Don’t forget to wear a shirt that you wouldn’t mind staining a bit in case the dye gets messy. For extra protection, throw a towel around your shoulders.
3. Get your hair ready

Make sure your hair is completely clean — free from hairspray or leave-in conditioners.
Tease it a bit to help the blending process, then part it into two sections.
4. Start painting

After you’ve poured the product into the bowl and put gloves on, take a scoop of dye and rub it into your hair as high up as you want the color to go.
Blend it with the paintbrush, and look through your hair carefully to make sure you’ve hit every strand.
5. Let it sit

Once you’ve finished painting your hair, give it some time to sink in. The time necessary may vary, so be sure to follow the instructions on your own product.
6. Wash, dry and take tons of photos

Once the dye has had a chance to settle, go through your typical hair washing routine and style it however you’d like — and don’t forget to take a ton of selfies to share, obviously.
Even something as simple as subtly dyeing the ends of your hair can brighten an otherwise boring week in quarantine. There’s never been a better time to try something new.
