Since hair salons are closed indefinitely, people with professionally dyed hair are slowly and tragically watching their roots become more prominent.
If you have highlights, taking matters into your hands can result in long-term problems. You could add unsightly streaks to your hair or damage your follicles without even realizing it.
Though stylists can fix many at-home mishaps, you might have to wait a while to restore your hair to its former glory — and it could cost a pretty penny.
Alyssa Linfante, a color specialist at Love Lane Salon, gave In The Know four tips to maintain your highlights at home without making a mess of your hair.
1. Avoid box dye if possible

Using store-bought dye on top of your existing highlights can create messy bands of color throughout your hair.
“You’re going to, unfortunately, have to charge more at the salon to fix that,” Linfante said.
2. See how your hair will react to products before committing

Experimenting with unfamiliar chemicals can cause an allergic reaction or turn your hair an unexpected color. If you’re certain you want to take the risk of using a box dye, test your reaction to it on a small part of your hair before committing to using it all over.
3. Cover your roots with a spray

If your main concern is gray hair coming through, Linfante recommended one of her favorite products — L’Oreal Paris Magic Root Cover Up Gray Concealer Spray. It stays in your hair until you wash it out, and it only costs $11.
4. Try a gloss

For those of us who are wary about experimenting with color in any way, Linfante recommended treating your highlights with a gloss. It won’t make any new color appear, but it will add shine to your hair and help it look fresh again. Her favorite is the $14 Kristin Ess Signature Hair Gloss.
Above all else, remember we’re all in this together — none of us are going to have perfect hair color until the salons re-open, and that’s simply OK.
