Howard Murad wears many hats. He is a dermatologist, pharmacist and clinical professor of medicine at UCLA. He's also the president of the University for Inclusive Health and, most notably, he built the cult-classic skincare brand Murad Skincare.

Dr. Murad has quite the lineup of skincare hits. For the past three years, his best-selling retinol serum has been ranked No. 1 in the U.S., and the brand’s Rapid Age Spot and Pigment Lightening Serum holds the top spot as the No. 1 brightening specialist, according to Sephora.

While we spend all this newfound time at home, perfecting our skincare routine has found its way to the top of our to-do lists. Naturally, then, we decided to pick Dr. Murad’s brain to learn more of his expert skincare tips. (In the midst of this global chaos, Murad Skincare is teaming up with No Kid Hungry to help feed kids affected by school closures, so you can feel good about any product you buy!)

What are the top three Murad products people should know about and why?

I would say it all depends on your skin and what you’re looking to address. If you’re looking for a first step into retinol that is gentle on the skin, I would recommend our Retinol Youth Renewal Serum — it’s been the No. 1 Retinol Serum in the U.S. for 3 years running.

If you’re looking to address acne scars, I would highly recommend our InvisiScar Resurfacing Treatment — it’s a tiny but mighty product that conquers surface scars and discoloration.

Or if you’re looking for refined texture and overall brightness, I would point you in the direction of our Vita-C Glycolic Brightening Serum — this product is one of our newest launched that we’re very proud of. We were able to stabilize L-ascorbic acid with gold – the first technology of its time to launch in our market – increasing efficacy and overall results.

What skincare ingredient is most important when it comes to glowing, even skin?

Glycolic acid and vitamin C!

What would you consider the Murad ‘hero’ product and why?

I always say my favorite product has yet to be created! This response also depends on the consumer as there are different ‘heroes’ for everyone. I would say in terms of impact our acne and retinol lines have been very transformative for our consumers skin, in addition to our Rapid Age Spot and Pigment Lightening Serum which is the No.1 brightening specialist in the U.S. – this product specifically treats hyperpigmentation.

Although skincare is the name of the game, Dr. Murad actually says that his company is a “wellness brand at our core, long before the trend.”

“We were founded on my four pillars of wellness: eat your water, be kind to your mind, awaken your body and nourish your skin. In this belief, we’ve always looked at the whole person when addressing skin concerns because I believe skincare is healthcare and when you’re healthy, you’re beautiful – and so is your skin! When I was actively practicing dermatology and asked how many acne patients I had treated, I always responded with ‘zero’. I do not have acne patients, I have patients with acne,” he explained to In The Know.
