Ina Garten is going crazy social distancing too: 'Don’t forget the cocktails'

Ina Garten knows her audience.

This became undeniably clear when she posted an Instagram video titled “Cocktail hour” wherein Garten makes possibly the largest cosmopolitan cocktail ever consumed.

With the upward tick in the “virtual happy hour” trend, Garten surely recognized the public’s desire to learn how to make a proper cocktail to soothe the daily stress and panic following the news and being isolated.

“During these stressful times, it’s really important to keep traditions alive,” Garten says in the video. “My favorite tradition is the cocktail hour.”

Garten starts out with a large pitcher. “I like to make a lot of cosmos. You never know who’s going to stop by — wait a minute, nobody’s stopping by!”

Garten then pulls out a bottle of Grey Goose and suggests pouring in two cups of vodka, although Garten just sort of eyeballs it and pours a healthy amount into the pitcher.

Not all of us are the Barefoot Contessa and have a $50 bottle of vodka lying around, so any brand will do.

Next is any type of orange liqueur. Garten uses almost a full bottle of Cointreau.

“One cup of cranberry juice cocktail — I mean, how easy is this?” Garten asks, dumping the juice in with the rest of the concoction. “And a half cup of freshly squeezed lime juice. It’s got to be freshly squeezed, very important.”

Now that all the ingredients are added, Garten pulls out her enormous cocktail shaker that’s half-filled with ice.

“You have to shake it for 30 seconds,” Garten insists. “You have lots of time, it’s not a problem.”

A good martini glass completes the drink. Garten pulls out her favorite, the top of which is approximately the size of her head. After pouring in the shaken cosmo, Garten needs two hands to pick up her glass.

“Stay safe, have a very good time, and don’t forget the cocktails,” Garten concludes. It is unclear whether Jeffrey will have a cosmo of his own or if they’ll be splitting this one.
