Meet the woman who lives every day like it’s 1958 — from her clothes to her appliances

Laci Fay got hooked on the 1950s from growing up listening to her grandparents’ stories. They got married in 1955 and everything they told Fay about the time period seemed more colorful and optimistic than the present, so Fay decided to travel back in time.

“You should do what you like, you should do what makes you feel beautiful and dress however you want to dress that makes you feel the most like you,” Fay told In The Know.

For Fay, that means wearing authentic dresses, shoes, hats and brooches from the ’50s, gathered from thrift stores or occasionally given to her by people who had the clothes in storage.

“As soon as I put on my first 1950s dress with my hair and makeup done, that’s when I felt I was finally me,” Fay said. “I’ve never looked back since then.”

Fay’s passion for the ’50s goes beyond her outfits. Her and her husband, Dane, bought a house that was built in 1953 and set it up as a traditional ’50s home — complete with the appropriate appliances, decor and furniture, all found from second-hand shops.

“I don’t want it to look like it’s a ’50s museum,” Fay explained about the decorating choices. “I want it to look like it’s an authentic 1950s home that you’ve walked into.”

“When people walk into our house for the first time, a smile comes on everybody’s face,” Fay’s husband Dane said. “

The only room that’s out of theme, is Fay’s son Conner’s room. But even Conner finds the rest of the house charming.

“It feels so normal to me now that I wouldn’t really think of it as different anymore,” Conner said. “Now it’s fun to go to the thrift store and find something that just makes our house perfect.”

“I understand that to the outside folks looking in, it could be weird,” said Fay. “But I think everybody’s weird in their own way. Everybody’s nerdy about something, might as well be something that you love.”
