Doing your nails at home can be a challenge. Not only does the drying time seem like it takes forever outside of the nail salon, but it’s hard to make sure the coat is even. But while you’re testing out your own DIY manicures at home, our latest episode of Home Hacks is here to help.

If you don’t have a gel lamp, now’s the time to go back to regular polish manicures, which can be time consuming. But with tricks to open old nail polish bottles or how to make fun nail art designs, we’ve come up with four simple hacks to create your best at-home manicure yet.

  1. Can’t open your nail bottles? In a glass bowl, cover the polish with hot water, wait three to five minutes and add a rubber band for an extra grip.

  2. To check to see if your nails are dry, submerge your hands into ice water for three to five minutes. If water bubbles on your nail beds, they’re ready to go.

  3. Want to amp up your nail design? Tape off a section of your nail to create a geometric, color-blocking look with a second color.

  4. If you want to make your nails more glam, add some glitter. Simply start with a base coat and one color coat, dip wet nail into glitter, rinse off the excess glitter and finish with a top coat.
