Oh sunscreen, it’s the one thing in our skincare routine that many of us tend to forget. But as we get older, neglecting a daily dose of sunscreen can leave our skin more prone to damage, fine lines and wrinkles.
And while there are many sunscreens to try, when you get to the ripe age of 40 and beyond, it pays to be more selective.
In fact, according to the American Academy of Dermatology Association, people in their 40s and 50s should wear sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection with an SPF of 30 or higher.
Part of the reason for this is that you need an extra dose of protection from the sun to help offset all the changes happening in your skin. Things like a decrease in hormones, a dip in collagen all can ramp up in your forties.
And without any protection on our skin, the sun’s rays can accelerate the aging process.
“As people age, our bodies decrease the amount of hormones we produce,” medical expert for Invigor Medical, Dr. Elliot Lee told In The Know. “The decline in hormones such as estrogen, testosterone, and their derivatives affect the way skin appears. In postmenopausal women, there is a decline in the estrogen levels which results in several aging signs such as dryness, wrinkles, loss of elasticity, collagen breakdown and epidermal atrophy.”
If you’re not sure what sunscreen to try, then you might consider the Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream with Sunscreen.
Shop: Olay Regenerist Microsculpting Cream With Sunscreen, $22.48 (Orig. $22.99)
It's a moisturizer as well as a lightweight sunscreen that targets fine lines and wrinkles. It has SPF 30 and is packed with anti-aging ingredients and amino-peptides to help fight UVB and UVA rays. Additionally, the product boasts that it can help improve the skin’s texture within just four weeks.
Ron Robinson, a beauty cosmetic chemist and founder of Beauty Stat, said that the Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream is ideal for anyone who's looking to slow down signs of aging.
“This is great to use if the consumer is looking [for] anti-aging benefits while getting broad-spectrum sun protection. This would be for regular daytime use.”
And many Amazon shoppers appear to love it as well. It has nearly 1,300 positive reviews and more than 2,000 customer ratings. One male reviewer raved about how the product helped fight signs of aging.
“I am a male in my late 30's and I was looking for a moisturizer with some anti-age properties. This is much better than anything I have used before, but also twice as expensive. However, the fact that it is not greasy, does not smell and I notice clearly visible results (skin looks fuller, more elastic and with less fine lines) from its use, makes it worth it for me.”
Another reviewer, who described themselves in their sixties, raved about how youthful the cream made her appearance look.
"I've used Olay Regenerist for years. People are telling me how young I look. I'm 69 years old people think I'm in my 40's or early 50's," they wrote.
