Piglet, an adorable blind and deaf pink puppy, goes viral for a good cause

Piglet is a pink puppy who was rescued by veterinarian Melissa Shapiro from a hoarding situation in Georgia, along with his little mates and mom.

The dachshund-chihuahua mix has two dapple-colored parents — a common Daschund pattern that sort of looks like a marbling effect. When two dapple dogs breed, there is a 25 percent chance of each puppy being "double dapple," which is what Piglet is.

The double-dapple pattern is typically linked to ear and eye defects as well, which is why Piglet is blind and deaf.

Wishing everyone a Peaceful Pink Baby Piglity Goodnight. 💕😴💤🌙💕 . . Question of the week- What breed is Piglet? He is a rescued doxie chihuahua mix. He is also the result of two dapple colored dogs breeding in a hoarding situation. While we love our tiny pink boy, truthfully, we are strong advocates of spay and neuter. And certainly we are trying to educate about the severe consequences of breeding dapple to dapple, which can result in deaf and blind dogs. So- PLEASE- let’s avoid creating more profoundly disabled dogs by educating those who are unaware of the double dapple situation. It is crucial to stay away from breeders who intentionally breed dapple to dapple. The breedmix is cute but let’s find homes for the ones already on the the ground.💕💕 . . #pinkpigletpuppy #doubledapple #doubledappleawareness #rescuedogs #hoardingsituation
Once again, I wake up to the ultimate in precious heartwarming pinkness. He’s sweet, adorable, and intensely involved in connecting and being part of his world. He shares his special sense of love in a very special way. When Piglet arrived there’s no question that he was anxious and upset but it’s hard to call it separation anxiety bc he wasn’t attached to anything or anybody. We connected with Piglet by holding him and spending pretty much all the time with him trying to comfort him. This picture is the ultimate reward for our efforts. Over time, Piggy certainly settled down, attached himself to his people, and realized he was part of a family and didn’t have to feel alone and isolated anymore. Piglet probably does have some separation issues. He doesn’t want to be alone because when he’s alone, he’s really alone. He is able to stay and relax with the other dogs when needed. But he certainly prefers to be with his mom and dad, being snuggled, going to work, and going out for Piglet adventures. He has perfected his snuggle mode to the point that I am regularly subjected to this kind of cuteness that exceeds my own cuteness imagination. Have a great day! . . . #pinkpigletpuppy #snuggle #preciouspuppy #cutenessoverload #deafblind #rescuedogsofinstagram #specialneedsdogsofinstagram #adorable #weratedogs #dogsofinstagram
Yes he’s still pink. He had a nice time at the beach. When I took him out of his stroller he actually sat down on his own expecting to have his picture taken, and then get a cookie. He is such a character. It’s hard to be around the constantly heartwarming Piggy Lee. . . . #pinkpigletpuppy #heartwarming #beachdog #compobeach #westportct #deafdogsrock #blinddogsrock #routine #sitstay #doubledapple

We were excited to open an envelope filled with letters from our 2nd grade friends We were excited to open an envelope filled with letters from our 2nd grade friends in Alabama. The children asked if Piglet is happy in his home. The answer- Absolutely! Despite being deaf and blind and tiny, Piglet is a happy little dog. He loves his home and his life. He loves his mom and dad and dog pack family, he loves going to work, he loves to travel, and he loves to visit classrooms to teach children about his Piglet Mindset. The children also asked why Piglet is deaf and blind. This is a complicated question with a complicated answer. Piglet was born in a hoarding situation. In his case, the people had three non-neutered dogs that bred to make more dogs, who bred to make more dogs, who bred to make even more dogs... and so it went that 3 dogs became 37 dogs in their small apartment. One of those 37 was Piglet. With an overpopulation of unwanted dogs, we should not be allowing dogs to breed in this way. Making matters worse, many of the dogs in Piglet’s situation were dapple color patterned. When two dapple colored dogs breed there is a 25% chance that the babies will be “double dapple” meaning that they receive a dominant dapple gene from each parent. Double dapple dogs are white or mostly white and many have congenital ear and eye defects which cause them to be deaf and or blind. Piglet has both- he is deaf and blind. Piglet’s original people did not intentionally breed two dapples. They were in over their heads and things got out of control. Thankfully a rescue group came in to help. Piglet is one of the lucky ones. Many dogs like Piglet are euthanized by breeders if rescue groups don’t come forward. Many end up in shelters or abandoned on the streets. Piglet’s Mission includes educating about the severe consequences of double dapple breeding, and encouraging people to adopt special needs pets. We have created educational PDFs and lesson plans for teachers to incorporate Piglet Mindset into their curriculum. Learn more about our Piglet Mindset Educational Outreach Program. It was quite a Special Needs Saturday for Piglet and many other special needs dogs. Piglet traveled to NYC to attend his second Wheels on Wall Street Fundraiser for @loveyloaves . Deaf dogs, blind dogs, deafblind dogs, wheel chair dogs, tripod dogs... They were all there celebrating their beautiful lives with their devoted families. The dogs ran around together while their people compared experiences, asked questions, and connected over their special dogs. We met quite a few of Piglet’s friends which is always a lot of fun. Everyone who meets Piggy in person is surprised at how how tiny he is. As always, I worried about how Piglet would feel at the event bc there were so many dogs. But, in true Piglet fashion, he rose to the occasion and had a really nice afternoon. When we left, he took a nice walk around the South Street Seaport before we got into the car to go home. As expected, Piggy was very happy to be home. He played with his sisters and then settled down. Now he is completely zonked. The take home here after this very pleasant inspiring afternoon- We hope everyone will consider a special needs pet the next time you are looking to add to your family. I love my “normal” dogs, but caring for my dogs and birds who have profound disabilities has added a whole new dimension to my life. Working with and loving a dog like Piglet definitely takes extra energy, planning, improvisation, and compromise. But the rewards far outweigh the efforts that the Piglet project require. . . . #pinkpigletpuppy #wheelsonwallstreet #speciallyabled #specialneedspets #specialneedsdogs #disableddogs #dogswithdisabilities #fundraiserevent #rescuedog
What kind of party goer are you? We had a very nice 97th birthday party for Piggy’s grandmother, Oma, this afternoon. Piglet does not want to be left home, but he isn’t the outgoing party boy you might expect. It didn’t take much to convince him to pose on a rock with Evie for this beautiful picture, but swipe across to see what he did for most of the party. He had an active morning prior to the party and if you swipe further in this series of pics you can see what he did when he got home.😊 In his own way, the tiny pink man had a very nice comfortable day. He loves to be with his mom and Favorite Dad. And we respect his special needs and preferences when he’s out in social settings. Now Piglet is curled in a ball fast asleep on my lap. No doubt he’s recharging for his next burst of playful energy. Have a good Sunday night.💕 . . . #pinkpigletpuppy #partyanimal #bark #dogsofbark #dogsofinstagram #weratedogs #rescuedogs #deafdogsofinstagram #blinddogsofinstagram #disableddogsofinstagram #specialneedspets
Capping off an amazing day with this little pink boy. He is as versatile as any dog I know; in his own way. He doesn’t necessarily enjoy activities the same way other dogs do- he can’t see and he can’t hear. So when he gets to new places it takes him a lot longer to acclimate and adjust. He has 3/5 processing power compared to others. But what he has he uses to the max. That is a Piglet Mindset. Some would ask why I would drag him on a train and subway all the way to NYC to eat a few dog treats. Then drag him back home again in a Lyft car and another train. What does he get out of all of that? He enjoys experiencing the world just like any other individual does. He travels in the comfort of his own doggie stroller and he has his mom there to keep him centered. He absolutely does not want to be left home. Now we are heading out for our second dog walk at the beach. I first came down here with Gina and Dean, and Piggy. Now I’m here with Susie, Annie, Evie, and Zoey, and Piggy. He is aware of everything that goes on around him. He loves his routine and he is open to new adventures as long as he maintains some consistency like having his stroller as a home base. Piglet knows when we are off on an adventure and he makes sure he is included. I enjoy helping him live a productive, meaningful, happy life. Here he is looking as handsome as ever on a beautiful night at the beach. Have a great night. . . . #pinkpigletpuppy #beachdog #dogsdoingthings #adventuredog #dogfeatures #dogshavingfun #disableddogs #cutestever #ilovemydog #blinddogsofinstagram #deafdogsofinstagram #disableddogs

When Shapiro first brought Piglet home, he was reportedly too anxious to ever be left alone. According to People Magazine, Piglet would scream and cry constantly and couldn't play with other dogs.

But Piglet's disabilities haven't stopped him from living his life to the fullest. He purportedly overcame his anxieties, and his Instagram — which has 166,000 followers — is now filled with photos of himself exploring the world.

After Piglet became a mini-celebrity on social media, Shapiro said she heard about a third-grade teacher who used Piglet as a model for a positive-growth mindset for her students. Loving the idea, she started promoting the Piglet Mindset Outreach program, which offers free lesson plans and stories that aim to teach children how to face challenges and work with what they have.

All profits off of any Piglet merchandise are donated to special needs dog rescues around the U.S.
