Meghan Markle looks somber in navy for Field of Remembrance debut at Westminster Abbey

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped out on Thursday for this year's Field of Remembrance service held at the historic Westminster Abbey in London. Meghan's appearance marks her first time at the 91st annual event, which is held each year ahead of Remembrance Sunday to honor fallen servicemen and women.

The parents-of-one spoke with veterans and families of the armed forces attending the services and each planted a Cross of Remembrance in front of the church. The Duchess of Cornwall was expected to join Harry and Meghan, but had to cancel last minute due to a chest infection.

The duke dressed in a traditional Household Division ceremonial uniform for the occasion, while the duchess opted for a patriotic Sentaler coat from the designer's 2015 collection and what appears to be a pair of leather black boots from Tamara Mellon, which are available for purchase here. She paired the look with a Philip Treacy veiled hat and a red Remembrance Poppy, which has been used by Britain to commemorate the fallen since 1921.

It's expected that Meghan and Harry will again step out on Saturday and Sunday for more Remembrance Day events, including for the annual Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall and a Remembrance Day Service at the Cenotaph. Prince William and Duchess Kate are expected to join them, as are other members of the royal family.

Later this month, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will be taking a much-needed six-week break from royal duties and spend baby Archie's first Thanksgiving with Meghan's mom Doria in Los Angeles. They'll return to England to spend Christmas with Queen Elizabeth and the rest of the royal family at her majesty's Sandringham estate.
