Good People: This Chicago woman teaches transracial adoptive parents how to properly care for their child's hair

Welcome to Good People, a weekly video series that profiles individuals in our community who are helping others through selfless acts of kindness and generosity, with the goal of bettering the lives of those in need.

Stylist Tamekia Swint wants to bring transracial adoptive families together through hair care.

The Chicago native started her organization called "Styles 4 Kidz" to help teach transracial adoptive parents how to properly care for Afro-textured hair through a series of in-person workshops in her salon in the city's outskirts.

"It is important for transracial adoptive families to make it a priority to get hair care for their kids," Swint told AOL Lifestyle. "It helps for the development of a healthy self-esteem, connection with their culture and to have a good experience with their hair. It's critical to their success."

From teaching the fundamentals of hair care to a hands-on session on styling Afro-textured hair, Swint's work helps bring parents and children together and give them the confidence that is so vital for their relationship.

"What I was doing was so much bigger than just doing hair," she concluded. "It's what drives me on a daily basis to change someone's story."
