A Brooklyn-based company created $1,425 Nike 'Jesus shoes' filled with holy water

Like Jesus Christ, you too can now "walk on water" thanks to the Brooklyn-based brand MSCHF, which created a Nike sneaker filled with holy water.

Dubbed the "Jesus shoe," these limited-edition Nike Air Max 97s contain 60 cc of holy water from the River Jordan in the soles and feature red insoles (a nod to the Vatican), a steel crucifix on the laces, a Matthew 14:25 inscription on the toe, and are scented with frankincense, one of the gifts the wise men brought to Jesus the night he was born, according to the Book of Matthew.

The references don't stop there even. The shoebox they come in features a seal similar to the official Papal Seal, as well as an angel from Albrecht Durer's 1514 print "Melencolia I."

MSCHF created about a dozen of the "Jesus shoes," which launched on Monday, Oct. 8 and originally retailed for $1,425. However, they sold out within one minute, and now they're retailing on StockX for nearly $4,000.

However, if you're wondering why — as in, why MSCHF felt the need for a "Jesus shoe" — the answer is simple: They're trolling you. As a way to make fun of the many shoe and clothing collaborations as of late — from Taco Bell sunglasses to the Arizona Iced Tea and Adidas shoes that caused a near riot in NYC — the brand wanted to imagine what a collab with Jesus Christ himself would look like.

The brand's head of commerce, Daniel Greenberg, told the New York Post, "We wanted to make a statement about how absurd collab culture has gotten."

"We were wondering, what would a collab with Jesus Christ look like?" Greenberg said. "As a Jew myself, the only thing I knew was that he walked on water."

The collaboration, however, was not in partnership with Nike at all, he said, revealing that they bought the shoes at retail value and created the design by hand.

While it may be difficult to get your hands on the "Jesus shoes" (you can bid on them here), you can get yourself some white Nike Air Max 97s for under $200, holy water not included.
