Move over White Claw! Spiked cold brew is here for fall
Move over White Claw and other spiked seltzers! La Colombe Hard Cold Brew is here for fall.
La Colombe, the Philadelphia-based coffee brand famous for its draft lattes, has teamed up with MillerCoors to create Hard Cold Brew in black and vanilla flavors. The 9-fluid-ounce cans are only 100 to 110 calories and have a 4.2 percent ABV. They also have a kick of caffeine, but just under a single shot of espresso at less than 50mg per can. They're perfect for brunch, a post-day drinking rally, or you know, a quick pick-me-up before the pregame.

We gave La Colombe's Hard Cold Brew a taste test, and being that we're bigger latte than plain cold brew fans, the vanilla flavor was our favorite. It tasted just like, well, cold brew! The added vanilla muted the usual acidity for a smoother sip and the alcohol was just noticeable, making it super easy to drink.
Of course, coffee cocktails are nothing new. From Irish coffee to espresso martinis to White Russians, they all pack in a small kick of caffeine with a bold, roasted coffee flavor. Spiked cold brew in a can, however, is easier to take on the go and is less filling (read: won't cause bloating) than a beer or creamy drink. Plus, it follows in the increasing popularity of iced coffee drinks. (Starbucks has even reported that iced drinks make up 50 percent of their sales.)
Other makers of spiked coffee or cold brew in a can include Café Agave, Pabst Blue Ribbon and the first of all the innovators, Bad Larry’s Cold Hard Coffee. However, we predict the category to grow, much like spiked seltzer did in the past year.
If you hadn't heard, spiked seltzer was the unofficial drink of summer 2019. While the bubbly malt beverage has been around for a while, it recently peaked in popularity seemingly due to being lower in calories, lower in sugar, gluten-free and, well, cheap. White Claw event reported a shortage!
La Colombe Hard Cold Brew is currently available at select retailers in Boston, Denver, Tampa and Treasure Coast, Florida. Fingers crossed it becomes available online and in more states, because this stuff is good and we just can't get enough.
