Tory Burch looks to Princess Diana for royal-inspired NYFW collection

Tory Burch is taking style cues from Princess Diana's closet for her new Spring/Summer 2020 collection at New York Fashion Week.

Decades after the late royal's passing -- 22 years to be exact -- the mother to Prince Harry and Prince William is still playing style muse to many for everyday wear. Given her elegance and timeless sartorial choices, Diana seems like an obvious inspiration for American fashion royalty Tory Burch.

The designer's new line is comprised of plenty of late 1980's stylistic elements, including pouf sleeves, polka dots, belted blazers, silk trousers and chunky embroidery. However, Burch wanted to emulate so much more than merely Diana's fashion sense.

“I admire strong women and the fearlessness women have to embrace,” Burch said. “That’s something I support," she said, according to Vogue.

She continued to The Hollywood Reporter:

“It was not necessarily about Diana the style icon (because that’s clearly what she was), but I was more interested in Diana as a humanitarian, as someone who was incredibly fearless and had incredible compassion in her legacy and what she’s left behind. That’s something very admirable.”
