Pyer Moss shuts down Kings Theatre for NYFW show

From Kate Spade to Ralph Lauren, there are a slew of shows fashion enthusiasts anticipate during New York Fashion Week -- but there are no other during the weeklong celebration of fashion quite like Pyer Moss'.

The fashion label, founded in 2013, first came into the limelight during NYFW '16 for its disruptive yet beautiful display of art and fashion and has since been one of the most talked-about shows. Last year, founder and lead designer Kerby Jean-Raymond created a homecoming theme of sorts set in Brooklyn's Weeksville neighborhood, one of the first free black communities in the U.S. This year, the narrative of showcasing the glamour and beauty in black fashion continued with Jean-Raymond taking attendees on a trip through history in Brooklyn's Kings Theatre.

As an ode to Sister Rosetta Tharpe, known as the godmother of rock 'n' roll, Pyer Moss Collection 3's show was appropriately titled 'Sister.' The Spring 2020 line consisted of men and women's sportswear that explored vivid colors, bold prints, geometric shapes and daring silhouettes.

Much like last year, the show experimented with unique set designs as well as soulful musical selections performed by the 'Pyer Moss Tabernacle Drip Choir Drenched in The Blood.' As spectators looked on, models strutted down the runway in the latest pieces -- with 'Stranger Things' star Caleb McLaughlin making a special appearance to rock a look from the label's new collaboration with Reebox.

In addition to Jean-Raymond's designs, viewers also got a first look at drawings created by Richard Phillips. Phillips recently spent 45 years in jail for a crime he did not commit. His exoneration inspired Jean-Raymond so much that he commissioned the artist to create the watercolor illustrations that honored Sister Rosetta Tharpe and her famous guitar.
