Meghan Markle reportedly makes a surprise trip to NYC to watch BFF Serena Williams play at US Open

The US Open has one more celebrity to add to its guest list this week!

According to reports, Meghan Markle jetted off to New York City on Friday morning to watch her best friend Serena Williams compete in the US Open. People confirmed the duchess boarded a commercial flight from London, without baby Archie and husband Prince Harry, and will remain in the city through the weekend.

No members of her staff were present, said the Times, but the 38-year-old royal is expected to be traveling with her security detail.

“It is a last-minute trip,” said a source to the publication. She's "excited to support her friend, and then come back.”

The duchess and the pro-tennis player have been friends for years after allegedly meeting at the 2010 Super Bowl in Miami. Williams was present at Markle's wedding to Prince Harry in 2018, while the royal has been spotted at a number of the grand slam winner's matches over the years, including at Wimbledon when Meghan made one of her first post-baby appearances.

Williams also had a hand in planning Markle's lavish baby shower this past February in New York City. The bash, which was also co-hosted by pal Amal Clooney, was held in the $75,000-a-night penthouse of The Mark Hotel and included gift bags fit for a royal.

“Planning something like that takes a lot of effort,” Williams told Business of Fashion during an April interview about the shower. “I’m a perfectionist, so I’m like, ‘Let’s make it perfect.’”

Williams has also regularly spoken out in support of Markle in wake of the criticism the royal has faced since marrying Harry.

"Any time I see her name attached to anything, I don't read it,” the athlete said in August after Meghan's Wimbledon appearance. "She couldn't be a better friend to me. Low moments, high moments, she's always there."
