Over the past few years, low-calorie, high-protein ice creams have been infiltrating frozen aisles of grocery stores. Like America's favorite ice cream brand, Halo Top, people seem to love the idea of "healthifying" their favorite treats. Trader Joe's knows this and is finally jumping on the bandwagon with their own version of healthy ice cream.
Trader Joe's Light Ice Cream is now in stores and you're going to want to pick up a couple pints. According to the store's website, the ice cream is "rich, fluffy, and full-flavored, combining a delicious ice cream base with glorious mix-ins. Each bite is light, but satisfying, without ever feeling altogether too heavy."
Each flavor packs in at least 20 grams of protein, achieved by swapping "the more calorie-rich ingredients with milk protein concentrate."
Trade Joe's describes this jam best: "It’s made with Maine and Washington apples, New England apple cider, and spices including cinnamon, allspice, cardamom, cloves, coriander, ginger, and mace. It’s sweet and tart, superbly spiced, thick and spreadable, with chunks of apples in every jar."
"Soft, savory, and cheesy with a nice hint of peppery spice, this Pimento Cheese Dip is made in the traditional style, with thick shreds of extra sharp Cheddar and perfectly-sized chunks of roasted pimento peppers all mixed together with mayo and a mélange of spices including salt, pepper and onion powder."
"Trader Joe’s Chicken Chilaquiles Rojo boasts a pleasantly acidic, tomato-based chili sauce, seasoned with fragrant cumin and tangy lime. Green and red chiles offer a flavorful kick of heat that shines alongside chunks of grilled, white meat chicken pieces and tender pinto beans."

These are called "yogurt alternatives" because they contain absolutely no dairy, but that's the only difference between them and the real stuff. Trader Joe's supplier even adds live and active probiotics, just like yogurt.
Think of your favorite ranch dip, but make it vegan. This one is made with a coconut cream base that's seasoned with garlic, shallots, chives and dill. Thanks to the cream, it's thicker than dressing and more like a real dip for veggies, chips, pretzels and whatever else you can think of.
This salad has it all. It gets its crunch from the added sesame sticks and cahews, but also includes bok choy, savoy cabbage, red cabbage, carrots and nori seaweed flakes. Drizzle it with the included sesame ginger vinaigrette and top with fresh clementine slices for a sweet lunch or dinner.
Find this new 4-pack of blueberry muffins in the bakery aisle. There's nothing crazy about them that makes them different from other muffins, except that they're made by America's favorite grocery store.
These fermented beverages come with all the good stuff to promote better gut health. They're slightly tangy and bubbly, combining one ounce of vinegar with seltzer water in two amazing flavors: Cucumber & Mint and Strawberry & Basil.

These cookies (pronounced like "benny") are made from a wheat flour cookie batter and benne (a variety of sesame seeds). They're baked crispy and have a candy-like texture that's nutty, maple-y and oh, so good.
These chips draw inspiration from classic Jamaican cooking and coat plantain chips in jerk seasoning, which is a mix of allspice, garlic powder, cinnamon, coriander, nutmeg and ginger extract. One chip is not necessarily spicy on its own, but with each bite the spice builds.

All you need is beer, butter and this mix to make a hearty loaf of bread. You can top it with cheese and jalapeños or give it your own unique twist! This is a limited-edition, seasonal product so if you see it, get it ASAP.
This Indian bread is similar to naan, but is made with cow's and buffalo's milk instead of yogurt and yeast. It's dough is rolled into long ropes that are then rolled into spirals (like a cinnamon bun!) and pressed flat.
Jackfruit has a tender, meaty texture, but you can serve these like crab cakes with eggs, salad or just a little bit of lemon and remoulade.

Now, let's talk about the flavors, because although classic, they're bound to rock your world. First up is Chocolate Peanut Butter, which combines milk chocolate ice cream with velvety swirls of peanut butter. It packs in 23 grams of protein and only 370 calories per pint. TJ's recommends pairing it with a little whipped cream or more peanut butter cups, because why not?
The second flavor is Joe-Joe's Cookies & Cream, a nod to the grocery chain's famous Oreo-like cookie. This flavor mixes vanilla ice cream with crunchy pieces of Joe-Joe's Cookies and is loaded with 20 grams of protein and 310 calories per pint. Another epic recommendation by TJ's: Mix in your favorite gummy worms for a throwback to your childhood "worms in dirt" snack.
Both flavors are kosher-certified and will only put you back $2.99 per flavor. While there isn't yet a dairy-free version, we're keeping our fingers crossed for our vegan and lactose-intolerant friends.
In the past, dietitians have been quick to condemn ice creams marketed as "healthy," not only because of the added chemicals, but because they encourage consumers to eat a whole pint and use words like "guilt-free." Regular, full-fat ice cream should not cause anyone guilt for eating—most things are OK in moderation.
“I agree that the messaging associated with these ice creams has an underlining food/fat shaming tone,” Dr. Jessica D. Bihuniak, assistant professor of clinical nutrition at NYU Steinhardt Department of Nutrition and Food Studies and a registered dietician, told Huffington Post in 2018. “As a dietitian by training, I followed the school of thought that ‘all foods fit’ and that people should be able to include dessert foods in their diet in moderation.”
So, eat Trader Joe's Light Ice Cream or pick up a pint of the regular stuff, too. Either way, you'll be alright.
