The queen's closet takes up an entire *floor* and we'd like to see it, please

Have you ever wondered where Queen Elizabeth keeps all of her meticulously matched skirt suits? (Same.)

As it turns out, she doesn’t keep them in a regular old closet in her bedroom like us normal folks. Her clothes are actually stored on their own floor of Buckingham Palace.

Paul Burrell, who was Her Majesty’s footman before he became Princess Diana’s butler, recently told Yahoo UK’s The Royal Box that the Queen’sclothes are kept on a different floor from where she sleeps and gets dressed, and her outfits are brought down to her every day.

“Her dresser will bring down two outfits in the morning, which are sketched with pieces of material clipped to them so that the Queen can remember whether it’s silk or cotton or wool,” Burrell revealed. “The one the Queen picks is the one which is brought downstairs from up above so she doesn’t actually see her wardrobe with clothes in it.”

As for why her closet clothing floor is filled to the brim with such brightly colored ensembles? According to the documentary The Queen at 90, there’s a very specific reason for the Queen’s fashion choices, and it goes beyond color preference. As Sophie, Countess of Wessex, explained in the film, “She needs to stand out for people to be able to say, ‘I saw the Queen.’”

The countess continued, “Don’t forget that when she turns up somewhere, the crowds are two, three, four, ten, 15 deep, and someone wants to be able to say they saw a bit of the Queen’s hat as she went past.”

In fact, Queen Elizabeth’s biographer Robert Hardman even revealed that she once told him, “I can’t wear beige because nobody will know who I am.”

We’re not sure which is more badass: Wearing color to make sure people know they saw you, or eschewing a traditional closet in favor of an entire floor.

The Queen succeeded her father, George VI, in February 1952 and later added Princes Andrew and Edward to the royal family. Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, purchased Balmoral Castle in 1846, and the small castle which stood in the 7,000 hectare wooded estate was redeveloped in the 1850s.The granite building was designed by Aberdeen architect William Smith with suggestions from Albert himself, who decided the interior decoration should represent a Highland shooting box with tartan or thistle chintzes, and walls decorated with trophies and weapons. Queen Victoria often visited the Highlands with her family, especially after Albertfs death in 1861, and Balmoral is still a popular retreat for the present royal family.
