Meghan Markle had very specific instructions for her 'British Vogue' feature

Meghan Markle has made history after becoming the first-ever guest editor of British Vogue's iconic fall edition. Of course, it's a responsibility that the Duchess of Sussex didn't take lightly.

Markle had a very particular vision which she wanted to see through for the September issue, which features an interview between the royal and Michelle Obama, an interview between Prince Harry and Dr. Jane Goodall, as well as a poignant cover with 15 world-changing females.

One of her specificities? Ensuring the magazine's cover stars, which profiles everyone from Jacinda Ardern to Gemma Chan to Laverne Cox, were captured in their natural beauty.

The Duchess of Sussex reached out to celebrated photographer Peter Lindbergh to take on the job. It was an artistic choice that both Meghan and editor-in-chief Edward Enninful easily agreed on.

"It was one of those brilliantly spontaneous moments when HRH The Duchess of Sussex and I had exactly the same idea at exactly the same time," explained Enninful in an interview. “Peter sees beauty in real people, in real situations. He makes everybody feel their best.”

"I hate retouching..." Lindbergh explained to Vogue. “The number of beautiful women who have asked me to lengthen their legs or move their eyes further apart…. You would not believe. It’s a culture of madness.”

"My instructions from the Duchess were clear," he continued. "I want to see freckles! Well, that was like running through open doors for me. I love freckles.”

For the Duchess of Sussex, freckles are a sign of natural beauty. Her biggest pet peeve during her Hollywood days was that photographers and editors would erase her freckles and change her skin tone after photoshoots.

"For all my freckle-faced friends out there, I will share with you something my dad told me when I was younger: ‘A face without freckles is a night without stars," the actress shared in an Allure interview in 2017 about facing colorism in the industry.

Lindberg's cover for the magazine was shot in June over the course of several days and many countries, including the United States, England, Stockholm and Sweden. Issues will be available for purchase on Friday, August 2nd.
