How to dress like Meghan Markle, so you can look like a royal

Updated

Whenever the Duchess of Sussex steps out, people want to know: What or who is she wearing? Some call it the "Meghan Markle effect." Like many celebrities before her, including her sister-in-law Kate Middleton, when Meghan wears something, we want to wear it, too.

Meghan Markle has always had great style, but since becoming royal, she's had to pay even closer attention to the brands and styles she wears to avoid breaking royal protocol or worse, a fashion faux pas.

Some of Meghan's favorite high-end designers seem to include Givenchy (who designed her wedding dress), Self-Portrait, Altuzarra and Misha Nonoo (a friend of the duchess'). And on the more affordable end, she's been spotted wearing J.Crew, Rothy's, Aritizia, Club Monaco and Hatch.

But no matter the designer, she sticks to six main fashion trends when stepping out for an official royal event: trench dresses, pant suits, printed flowing dresses, heat-to-toe monochromatic looks, solid black dresses and just about anything navy.

Her style is simple, yet sophisticated, and classy, yet refreshing. You can shop the looks below to dress like Meghan Markle.

Trend: Trench dress

The duchess loves a good trench-style dress. To make her debut as a new mom and introduce Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor to the world, she wore a white sleeveless trench dress by Grace Wales Bonner.

Trend: Black pantsuit

Although it's been said that the queen isn't a fan of Meghan's pantsuits, the duchess has made a statement in them a number of times. One of our favorite looks was the Altuzarra suit she wore to the WellChild Awards in September 2018. Her suit featured a flare leg and long, double breasted jacket with a black satin square neck cami underneath.

Trend: Printed dress

Unlike the queen who sticks to solid, bright colored ensembles, Meghan stands out in florals, stripes and paisley prints. However, when wearing a print, she sticks to flowing, mid-length or long dresses. While in Morocco in February 2019, the Duchess of Sussex stunned in a blue Carolina Herrera paisley gown that came straight off the Fall 2019 runway.

Trend: Monochromatic

Dressing in the same color heat-to-toe, also known as a monochromatic look, is an easy to way to look pulled together. Meghan Markle wore several nude monochromatic looks during her pregnancy, especially during the winter time when she could add a matching coat. For a visit to Mayhew in London, one of her patronages, the duchess wore a beige-colored turtleneck maternity dress from H&M underneath a beige cashmere Armani coat with coordinating shoes and a Stella McCartney bag.

Trend: Black dress

While a black dress isn't even close to a new trend, Meghan Markle knows how to use one to look simply regal. For her first solo engagement as duchess, she wore a black Givenchy dress with sheer sleeves. Then, to honor her good friend, Givenchy's Clare Waight Keller, at the British Fashion Awards, Meghan wore a one-shouldered velvet black gown that hugged her growing baby bump.

Trend: Navy

If the duchess has a favorite color, it has to be navy. She's constantly spotted wearing the color, and isn't even afraid to pair it with black. For a surprise appearance with Prince Harry at WE Day, the duchess came out on stage wearing black skinny jeans and a navy blazer. (She donned a similar look in Morocco!) And at her first public appearance since giving birth to Archie, she wore an all-navy dress, coat and fascinator.
