Rachel Zoe admits her career would be 'a lot easier' had Instagram existed when she started

Updated

Rachel Zoe's decades-long career is nowhere near the end.

Her multihyphenate empire started with her behind-the scenes work as the most famous celebrity stylist, highlighting her work with A-list clients for five seasons on Bravo's "The Rachel Zoe Project," (who could forget when she chopped the sleeve off a Chanel dress for Cameron Diaz?!) Today, the mother of two pioneers The Zoe Report, Rachel Zoe Collection and most recently, a subscription service called Box Of Style.

AOL caught up with Rachel to talk about everything from how her career would be different had Instagram been around at the time and the three style items you should ditch this summer. If you want to know how to conquer every aspect of the fashion industry, keep reading!

How did the idea for Box of Style come about? What was your inspiration for creating an on-demand subscription service of your personal style?

Our luxury subscription [service] Box of Style came about from my past experience as a curator and stylist. I wanted to be able to connect with my audience in a way that was most natural to me–which is through styling and educating woman to live a life of style. The box introduces our members to luxury brands, either well known or up-and-coming but all hand picked by myself and team. I'm extremely hands on in the process and make sure that everything that goes into the box is something of value for our members or someone they love.

From The Zoe Report to Box of Style, your company is constantly innovating with new projects. How important is it for your brand to keep on expanding into new ventures?

I started in this business over two decades ago, and throughout my career I have evolved so much both personally and professionally. For the majority of my career I was a stylist and editor for fashion magazines, pop stars, models and actors in Hollywood. Simultaneously I published two NY Times best-selling books and launched 5 years of "The Rachel Zoe Project" on Bravo. The Zoe Report and Zoe Media Group was created in 2009. In 2011 The Rachel Zoe Collection was born at NYFW, and then my life began all over again with the births of sons, first Skyler Morrison in March of 2011 and then Kauis Jagger in 2013. My Box of Style launched in 2015 and really has only just begun! Anything that I take on has to stay true to who I am and take on the DNA of the brand.

You've been in the fashion business for decades and have pioneered the world of styling. Where do you see the future of fashion heading?

The fashion industry has changed drastically and in almost every way since I began my career as a stylist. With the explosion of the internet and social media, access to the behind the scenes world of fashion is exposed. In my career it was very secretive, it was for insider fashion people only - now it's much easier for the stylists, hair and make up artists to become brands within themselves as their own marketers. The future is hard to predict…but I do not see any sign of social media slowing now! The ability for people to create their own brands is never ending.

How do you think your career would have been different if there was Instagram when you were at the height of your styling career?

I think things would have been a lot easier for me! I did not have the support of the industry or the public when I was coming up as a stylist, it was very secretive. I didn't become in the public eye on purpose - my show was intended to give viewers the opportunity to see behind the scenes in the fashion industry. I think more than anything social media is such personal way to connect with your audience.

Where do you see the subscription business heading?

I think the subscription industry is really just getting started! It's a fast growing business model that we feel well suited to grow with. For our Box of Style, we want to continue to elevate product offerings, add additional benefits as well as continue to give the best customer service to our members.

Summer 2019 Box of Style's ranges from contemporary to Missoni. How important is it to give your subscribers luxury at an affordable price?

We are our members’ best advocates! It's our mission to give them the best products at the best prices. Our Summer 2019 Box of Style includes Missoni Home (which has always had a special place in my heart), a cult-favorite Benefit Cosmetics, as well as some other exciting brands I wanted to introduce my members to: Machete (earrings that are handmade in Italy), Glo Skin Beauty which is a cruelty-free skincare line, and Danielle Nicole who has created an incredible hand-crafted macrame bag that I adore. The best part of our Box of Style is that members get the opportunity to have access to all these luxury items but only have to pay $99.99 for over $450 of fashion and full-sized beauty products.

3 things everyone should own for summer season?

Summer is all about effortless glamour so for me three items everyone should own for the summer season would be a maxi dress for a casual brunch or an afternoon stroll around town, a super colorful blanket, like the Missoni towel in our Summer Box of Style, which is easy to take from the beach to a BBQ on chilly summer nights, and a great pair of sunnies to complete every look!

3 things everyone should ditch this summer?

Personally I shift away from my heavier fabrics, dark colors and suede and leather bags. I love lots of whites, maxi dresses, and light weight luxurious fabrics during the summer months!

What are you working on right now that you're most excited about?

Our luxury subscription - Box of Style just won the Best Women's Box Award at the Sub Summit Conference, which is really exciting for us. Right now a huge focus is continuing to grow that business and partner with some really exciting brands in the near future. In addition, our Collection business is expanding into some really big categories that I've been dying to make happen, exciting collaborations on the way. Plus the summer collection just hit ShopRacheZoe.com and we debut fall in September!
