This is the right way to pronounce Cannes

Updated

Cannes is taking over our social media feeds with the biggest celebrity sightings, the most glamorous fashion and riveting film reviews this season has to offer. And that's to be expected: As one of the biggest film festivals in the entire world, the entire film industry is flocking to the pristine and beachy town in the south of France -- and bringing the most renowned names with them.

This year's glitzy Hollywood extravaganza has seen a rainbow of PDA, a fainting spell, handsome besties Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio walk the red carpet together, Helen Mirren's new pink hair and Selena Gomez make her (very gorgeous) festival debut. What a week.

With only three days to go, the 11-day soiree is on its last leg. But with even how acclaimed the festival is, many don't actually know how to pronounce Cannes. In fact, the name is at the heart at some of the biggest celebrity blunders, and it's such a debacle that many of the reports published on the event will probably address the pronunciation somewhere. Don't roll your eyes -- we bet if you actually tried to say it out loud, you'd be wrong.

But how do you actually pronounce Cannes?

So how do you say it without looking like a total fool? We got you covered.

Is it Cans? Cann-es? Cahn? Nope. Apparently, "con" in French is a derogatory word about women-- so let's leave that one out.

The correct way to say the French town includes dropping, well, basically everything: The "c" in the beginning turns into a "k" and the "s" at the end is silent. Some say that "a" becomes an "e." Effectively, Cannes becomes Ken. Say it with us now.
