Why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may skip posing for photos with royal baby at the hospital

Updated

Royal tradition calls for new mothers to pose for a photo with their newborn outside of the hospital mere hours after giving birth. Princess Diana and Kate Middleton both carried on the tradition, but not without controversy. People believe the expectation to look perfect post-birth is not realistic and this adds unwarranted pressure on new mothers. (Duchess Catherine had a team of hair and makeup people help prepare her for the photo.) So, it's almost no surprise that Duchess Meghan, who tends to do things a little differently that the other royals, may skip the photo op outside of the hospital.

Royal correspondent for The Sun Emily Andrews discussed the topic with her "On Heir" podcast co-host Omid Scobie and believes the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will break tradition, based on Meghan's feminist views.

"At the moment, we understand that she isn't, she doesn't want to do that, isn't going to do that," Andrews said.

"Given what we know about Meghan, the optics of a totally glamorous, picture-perfect moment hours after giving birth are not quite in alignment with her views on the world," Scobie further explained.

Arthur Edwards, a longtime photographer for The Sun who covers the royals, said he doesn't know of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's plans. However, he is hopeful. "I’ve asked the question and I’ve got no answers, so I don’t know," he told Town and Country.

"I photographed Harry coming out of that hospital in his mother’s arms, and I hope to photograph Harry’s baby when coming out in Harry’s arms," Edwards continued. "But Harry might do it differently. He may have his own plans. We’ll know soon enough."

The New York Post speculates that the first photo of Baby Sussex will instead be revealed on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's new Instagram account.

Baby Sussex is expected to arrive sometime this month, yet exactly where the duchess will give birth is unconfirmed.
