Millennials vow to eat avocados despite massive recall: 'If I die, I die'

Millennials’ love of avocados knows no bounds, apparently. The green fruits were voluntarily recalled in six states on Saturday, March 23, by the Henry Avocado Corporation due to listeria concerns, but that’s not stopping young people from continuing to eat the trendy food.

Though there have been no reported illnesses associated with the recall, listeria, a foodborne bacterial illness that can cause muscle aches, fever, flu-like symptoms and nausea, can be especially harmful to pregnant women, young children, the elderly and those with impaired immune systems.

“Henry Avocado is issuing this voluntary recall out of an abundance of caution due to positive test results on environmental samples taken during a routine government inspection at its California packing facility,” the company said in a statement. The statement also noted that the family-owned business is cooperating with federal and California health officials to facilitate an efficient removal of all the potentially contaminated food.

“We are voluntarily recalling our products and taking every action possible to ensure the safety of consumers who eat our avocados,” added Phil Henry, president of Henry Avocado.

The recalled products – California-grown conventional and organic avocados — were packed at Henry Avocado’s packing facility in California and distributed in Arizona, California, Florida, New Hampshire, North Carolina and Wisconsin. However, avocados imported from Mexico and distributed by Henry Avocado are not subject to the recall and may continue to be sold and consumed.

Given the scope of the recall, it’s understandable that consumers might think twice before chowing down on the creamy fruit, but that doesn’t appear to be the case for millennials. After all, this is a segment of the population (currently between the ages of 23 to 38) known for a love of things such as avocado toast. And avocado sneakers.

As one fan of the fruit wrote on Twitter: “It’s gonna take more than a recall on avocados to stop me from eating avocados.” Added another, “Now I gotta cancel avocados. Smh.”
