NYFW: Lela Rose hosts a dog show for her fall collection

During New York Fashion Week you can expect dimly lit runways, models strutting their stuff looking rather serious and lots of celebrities sitting in the front row. But this year, Lela Rose added a dash of much-needed fun and humor to NYFW.

To present her eponymous Fall/Winter 2019 collection, Ms. Rose threw a full-on dog show. Models walked out to the makeshift arena in gorgeous gowns, each accompanied by an adorable pooch.

While Jenna Bush Hager and Robert Verdi made for hilarious dog show commentators, the clothes were the real stars of the show. Gowns with pearl embellishments followed plaid skirts while bright florals and caramel colored neutrals also made appearances.

We caught up with the designer herself after the show to hear more about how this season's collection came to be.

"I have been a long time dog lover, [my dog] goes literally everywhere with me. And after last season I was like, 'we really need to do something that’s gonna be fun and that everyone loves.' Like fashion week needs a little bit of energy and fun and I was like, 'what about dogs?' I mean I love dogs, everyone loves dogs, so we started with that coat with the greyhound velvet and every print has little dogs hidden in them. The pants have dog tags, the buttons are dog cameos -- everything is just fun and joyful, but still elegant and beautiful."

Our favorite looks from the collection included a cobalt blue and apricot pink floral dress as well as a matching white and black blouse and trouser combo that was topped a pearl-encrusted coat.
