Lady Gaga's hair stylists reveal secrets for taking care of icy platinum blonde hair

Updated

Coloring your hair any new color can be intimidating, but dying it icy platinum blonde is not for the faint of heart. The process of going platinum can take up to a couple hours at the salon and requires tons of upkeep — it's a real commitment.

Refinery29 spoke with one of Lady Gaga's famed colorists, Patti Song, on how she keeps the star's hair the perfect shade of platinum. Although it depends on the hair's rate of growth, Song suggested going in for touch-ups frequently and not letting it go more than five weeks without one. Once you let it grow out for too long "it'll be more difficult to avoid the band of uneven color near the root."

One way to keep hair icy and white in-between coloring is using purple shampoo, conditioners and mask treatments. These products can neutralize brassy, warmer tones that often pop up. Song explained, "The trick is to squeeze the purple [product] directly on to your hair and let it sit. Don't scrub and suds it up immediately because then you're just cleaning the hair without toning it."

Of course, leaving it on too long can turn your hair purple and dull, but it will depend on the hair's porosity. So, start out using it conservatively or test out a few hidden strands first.

Frederic Aspiras, another colorist of Lady Gaga's, revealed earlier this month to Cosmopolitan that he was using Joico's Blonde Life Brightening Mask to keep the stars locks extra shiny at the Golden Globes. The mask retails for $21 and speaking from personal experience, makes hair shiny, bright and soft to the touch.
