Meghan Markle initially made a ‘conscious effort’ to avoid dressing like Kate Middleton

Meghan Markle has worked over the past year to establish her fashion identity as a working duchess-and consciously create a style different from Kate Middleton’s, a royal insider tells ELLE.com. Despite salacious tabloids alleging Kate and her team are annoyed that Meghan has copied her, Kate is not actually upset by or jealous of Meghan, as the women have very different styles and interests. In fact, Kate has been helping her. “Kate has been on hand to help guide Meghan with advice about certain designers and royal protocol," the royal insider explains.

Meghan and Kate have different teams to plan their outfits. Meghan works with her friend and stylist Jessica Mulroney to review what she'll wear to events long in advance, as Mulroney is based in Toronto and visits Meghan only periodically.

Meet Jessica Mulroney, Meghan's BFF

1. The two first met in Canada

Jessica, a Canadian-based stylist and independent PR and marketing consultant, first started working with Meghan while the actress relocated from her native Los Angeles to Toronto to film Suits. Meghan played Rachel Zane, a paralegal-turned-lawyer, on the legal drama from seasons one to seven, which is currently being played out on the USA Network. Season seven marks Meghan's last, as the network previously revealed she would be exiting the show to start her fabulous new life in London with Harry.

2. Jessica has helped Meghan picked out a wedding dress once before

During the show's sixth season, Meghan's character was prepping for a wedding to Mike Ross, portrayed by Patrick J. Adams. According to a behind-the-scenes video from HELLO! Canada magazine, Jessica and Meghan actually picked out the stunning Anne Barge gown that Rachel got to wear on wedding day (though, she and Mike never actually ended up tying the knot... more on that HERE).

(Getty)

3. Speaking of suits, she loves pulling them for her clients!

Jessica has also played stylist for stars like Justin Trudeau's wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, and Cityline host Tracy Moore, whom she often puts in jumpsuits that make a statement and create flattering lines. Jessica is personally a fan of a good suit, and admits to having an "obsession" with the chic pieces.

(Getty)

4. She's a pro at all things bridal

When it comes to weddings, Jessica's the go-to gal in Canada! She regularly helps brides-to-be say "yes" to the dress (and "#YesToTheJess") as a consultant for the Canadian outpost of Kleinfeld’s, a popular New York-based bridal boutique.

(Getty)

5. She runs two fabulous Instagram accounts

In addition to her personal account (@jessicamulroney), the fashionista also has one for "all things bridal and style" (@jessicamulroneyweddings). The account features a feed of stunning wedding gowns and footwear, bridal trends and decor to make any bride-to-be's special day picture-perfect.

(Getty)

6. She's reportedly put together some of Meghan's most iconic, regal looks to date

Royal expert Katie Nicholl writes in her book, Harry: Life, Loss, and Love, that Jessica was actually one of the few friends who knew about Meghan's relationship with Harry before their secret went public. In fact, once the paparazzi discovered the actress was dating Harry, Jessica helped the two take shelter at her Toronto home.

That's why it's no surprise that Meghan and Jessica have remained close. Multiple outlets have reported that Jessica was the mastermind behind one of Meghan's chicest ensembles -- the Line the Label wrap coat, emerald green P.A.R.O.S.H. dress and  Aquazzura Matilde Crisscross Suede pumps she donned during her royal engagement photocall with Prince Harry.

(Getty)

7. Jessica has already said 'I do'

She's married to Canadian broadcaster and TV presenter Ben Mulroney, the son of former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. They share three kids, a daughter, Ivy, and twin sons, Brian and John.

(Getty)

8. Her daughter might join Princess Charlotte as a flower girl

A source told ET earlier this week that in addition to Prince George and Princess Charlotte, Meghan and Harry may be having a few more children serve as page boys and flower girls.

Seeing as how close Meghan and Ivy seem to be (the humanitarian once taught Jessica's mini-me how to tap dance!), we wouldn't be surprised to see Ivy taking on one of those roles.

(Getty)

9. Just like Meghan, she loves fitness!

Meghan swears by yoga and Pilates, and Jessica is also all about working on that core. She frequently shares pics and videos, like the one below, from her intense workouts to Instagram.

Kate, meanwhile, works with Natasha Archer Jackson, who often has designers send samples to Kensington Palace. Kate will try the clothes with her there, and the two will choose what Kate ultimately wears to events.

Natasha Archer Jackson.

From the very start, Meghan and Mulroney knew that the Kate comparisons would be inevitable-and they treaded carefully in the beginning. The royal insider explains that there was a "conscious effort" by the two women to "not be accused of copying Kate's style." Their goal was to give Meghan her own unique wardrobe. But Meghan and Mulroney aren't completely opposed to taking a little inspiration from Kate since the Duchess of Cambridge dresses so well and according to royal protocol. Mulroney has "certainly kept an eye on Kate's style because she hasn’t put a foot wrong and is a great role model," the insider says.

But the differences between Kate and Meghan can be seen in the colors they choose (Meghan: more blacks and more muted colors; Kate: brights, prints, and pastels) and the designers they wear. While Kate and Meghan both wear designers like Emilia Wickstead, Erdem, and Amanda Wakeley to events, the two have different go-to designers-part of what makes their individual styles so distinct.

Meghan has worn Givenchy by Clare Waight Keller to many of her first big events as a working royal in addition to her wedding, from her first event with the Queen to her first solo event period in September. Her reception dress designer, Stella McCartney, is also a favorite of the Duchess, along with Aritzia, Brandon Maxwell, Canadian label Mackage Coats, and Maison Birks Jewellery.

Like Meghan, Kate also often wears her wedding dress designer, Sarah Burton's, work for Alexander McQueen to significant events. Kate wore McQueen to Meghan's wedding, for example, along with to Prince Louis's christening earlier this year. Kate also often wears Emilia Wickstead, Jenny Packham, and Catherine Walker, a favorite of her late mother-in-law Princess Diana's.

Both women believe in "diplomatic dressing" on royal tours: paying homage to the hosting country by wearing local designers. For Meghan, this was especially pronounced during her and Prince Harry's tour of Australia, Fiji, Tonga, and New Zealand, where in Australia alone, she wore multiple looks from Australian designers like Martin Grant, Dion Lee, and Karen Gee.
