Here’s how Meghan Markle and Prince Harry revealed baby news to the royal family

Friday, October 12, 2018, turned out to be quite the day to remember for the British royal family.

First, Princess Eugenie and her longtime love, Jack Brookbanks, captured the spotlight with their wedding at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle.

And, as we’ve since learned, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had exciting news of their own. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex informed family and friends at the wedding that they are expecting a baby in the spring, according to the Guardian.

Queen Elizabeth; Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh; Charles, Prince of Wales; Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall; William, Duke of Cambridge; and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, were “delighted” at the news, the Guardian reports. This is how Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s child will change the line of succession.

Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, also said she was excited to welcome her first grandchild and was “very happy at this lovely news.” It’s not clear whether Meghan told her estranged father, Thomas, according to news accounts. The couple married at St. George’s Chapel in May and baby speculation has been high since. It hit a fever pitch when Meghan arrived at Princess Eugenie’s wedding in a loose coat that some speculated was hiding a baby bump.

The duchess recently had her 12-week scan and is due in late April. Kensington Palace released the official pregnancy announcement on Monday, October 15, just after she and her husband embarked on a 16-city tour that starts in Australia. Find out why Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s child won’t get a royal title.

Not everyone may have been excited about the announcement, however. Immediately after Kensington Palace sent out the news, Princess Eugenie’s mother, Sarah, Duchess of York, sent out a tweet thanking her dressmaker for one of her dresses, followed by a series of photos from her daughter’s wedding. She had yet to congratulate Meghan and Prince Harry, and social media users noticed. One person commented, “Maybe issue congratulations to Meghan as well or instead of talking about your family wedding,” while others accused Meghan of “stealing Eugenie’s thunder.”

Meanwhile, bookmakers taking odds on baby names say that Diana, Arthur, James, and Victoria are top contenders. Next, check out the 14 royal pregnancy rules Meghan Markle will have to follow.
