Met Gala 2019 theme announced as 'Camp: Notes on Fashion'

Updated

It may only be October, but the fashion world is already thinking about the first Monday in May and is buckling down plan the industry's biggest event: The Met Gala. The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced the theme for the annual fashion extravaganza on Tuesday-- and it's unlike any other theme in gala history.

Enter "Camp: Notes on Fashion," which will be chaired by Anna Wintour, Harry Styles, Lady Gaga, Serena Williams as well as Mr. Michele, the creative director of Gucci.

"We are going through an extreme camp moment, and it felt very relevant to the cultural conversation to look at what is often dismissed as empty frivolity but can be actually a very sophisticated and powerful political tool, especially for marginalized cultures," explained Andrew Bolton, curator behind the Costume Institute, according to The New York Times.

He continued, “Whether it’s pop camp, queer camp, high camp or political camp — Trump is a very camp figure — I think it’s very timely.”

The idea stems from writer Susan Sontag's 1964 essay Notes on Camp.

Bolton asserted that in her writings, he saw the “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration . . . style at the expense of content . . . the triumph of the epicene style”—so timely with what we are going through culturally and politically that, “I felt it would have a lot of cultural resonance.” It's an approach that stood out to him, he told Vogue, while clarifying that camp can be interpreted in many ways -- both happy and sad.

Not only will the May 6th spectacular feature the celebrated and eccentric red carpet event and ball, but it will coincide with a highly-visited exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It'll feature 175 different pieces of men and women's wear, paintings and drawings. One section will be dedicated to Versailles and "the use of camp as a language in the queer community,” while the second section will be dedicated to the thematic interpretations by contemporary designers.
