Celeb stylist Clinton Kelly reveals the closet staples you need to update your style for fall

Updated

You know this, we know this: dressing for early fall is never easy. By morning it's chilly, by afternoon it's summer, and we're somewhere in the middle dressing for both. By midday we're sweating, and this transitional weather is definitely problematic for picking out our outfit in the morning.

But there are few ways to update your wardrobe (without spending a lot!) to help get us in the fall mindset.

We caught up with celebrity stylist Clinton Kelly to talk about his tips and tricks for shopping for a fall wardrobe on a budget. His first (and only) stop? Marshalls.

"If I’m crunched for time and only have a few minutes to shop Marshalls in the morning (one of the best times to go since most shipments are delivered overnight!), I like to have a game plan to make the most of my time in-store," he said. "I’ll usually start by shopping the front of the store before easing into the racks or aisles. It’s a great place to start to discover coveted finds for the season."

Here's what is on his shopping list for the new season.

1. The Leather Moto Jacket: "My favorite fall must-have for the cooler temperatures is a leather moto jacket in red, metallic or black with embellishments like studs and embroidery. It pairs well with anything in your closet and layer it over a plaid shirt to add warmth on a chilly day."

2. Animal Print: "Animal print is back and it’s one of my favorite trends of the season. If you’re looking to play it safe, choose a wide belt, a great pair of booties or a luxe handbag to rock the look. If you’re feeling bold, pair the print with jewel tones or mix with another print, like fall florals, for runway-worthy style."

3. Mustard Yellow: "One of the most trending hues for fall is mustard yellow, and I love it because you can wear it as a pop of color with a great shoe or handbag, or take your entire look to the next level with a chic blazer or coat in the sunny shade."

4. Riding Boots: "This fall, I’m loving tall leather riding boots. They’re so versatile and you can pair them with a great skirt or pants. If you’re looking to try something different, opt for a boot in a great texture or bold color, or try booties for a transitional fall look."
