Onion and garlic

You may be so eager to get dipping that you forget to add onion and garlic, but they're great for flavoring a basic guacamole.

Fresh herbs

Adding fresh herbs like cilantro brings a distinct flavor to many classic versions of the dip. Fresh chives and scallions are also a good alternative to onions.

Heat

Jalapenos are one way to add kick to your guacamole, and as Rick Bayless suggests, you'll want to include the seeds to bring the heat.

Fruit

It may seem unconventional, but adding fruit to your guacamole will give it a nice sweetness that acts as a contrast to the savory avocado. Pomegranate seeds, pineapple, mango and grapefruit are all good options.

Sour cream

If you want to give your guac a little creaminess, you can try adding just a little sour cream or Greek yogurt.

Honey

You don't need to add fruit to give your guacamole a sweet side. Drizzling honey into your dip is a nice way to give balance to any spice you're including.

Bacon

If you love bacon, go ahead, add it to your guacamole for a smokier version.

Tequila

You don't need to reserve all of that tequila for the margarita you're drinking alongside your guacamole. Pour a splash right into the dip for a fun twist. (Just be sure to keep this one away from the kiddies.)

Corn

Corn is the main ingredient in some salsa dips, so why not add it to your guacamole too? Grilling the corn first adds even more delicious flavor.

Cheese

Cheese is good paired with most things, and that includes guacamole. Melting a queso oaxaca or a Monterey Jack and pouring it over your guacamole makes a great party appetizer.
