Tom Ford opts for neutrals, leather and leopard for Spring 2019

Updated

While New York Fashion Week officially kicks off today, Thursday, Tom Ford made the most Tom Ford move in commencing the industry's biggest week with his show on Wednesday night.

And he did it with a whole lot of leather, feathers and celebrity sightings, including Gigi Hadid and Kaia Gerber on the runway, while Tom Hanks, Cardi B., and Anna Wintour watched from the front row.

Ford's 2019 Spring/Summer ready-to-wear collection was both rough and feminine at the same time: hard-edged leather was softened with a trim of lace, structured suits and framed pantsuits were tenderized with splashes of lilacs, pinks and satin shoes.

Crocodile biker jackets were juxtaposed with flowy, blush silhouettes and flirty feathers, while male models donned monochromatic tan suits and 80s-era sunglasses and bomber jackets.

“I wanted to make men and women feel more beautiful and to empower them with a feeling of confidence,” the designer explained in his show notes. “I did not want to make clothes that were ironic or clever, but simply clothes that were beautiful.”
