Kate Spade's father dies at 89 just a night before her funeral

Kate Spade's father, Earl F. Brosnahan, Jr., has passed away at the age of 89. The devastating news comes just weeks after Spade committed suicide and just a night before her funeral.

The family released a statement to "Good Morning America" on Thursday: We are deeply saddened to announce that Katy’s father, Earl F. Brosnahan, Jr. (Frank), passed away last night at age 89. He had been in failing health of late and was heartbroken over the recent death of his beloved daughter. He was at home and surrounded by family at the time of his passing.”

Following Spade's death at only 55, Brosnahan spoke with the Kansas City Star about his last conversation with his fashion designer daughter.

"She’d been taking some pills, which I advised her not to take," Brosnahan told the Kansas City Star. He also revealed that he had spoken with his daughter the day before her death and that she seemed fine despite her ongoing mental health problems. Just hours after her death, Spade's sister revealed that she had been suffering from depression.

Spade's husband Andy also confirmed that she had been battling mental health issues for years and that they had been living separately for 10 months at the time of her death.

Spade's funeral will be held in Kansas City, Missouri on Thursday, where her father also grew up. The designer, whose eponymous brand turned her into one of the most influential designers in American fashion history, committed suicide at her New York City apartment on June 5. She was found by a housekeeper.
