Whitney Port talks her favorite summer dish, traveling with a toddler and her love of a great deal

The Hills alum, blogger, fashion designer, author and mom to Sonny, almost 1, knows just how important a good deal is. We chatted with the 33-year-old California beauty on everything from traveling with a toddler, her favorite queso dip and her go-to store for summer entertaining.

What are some of your must-haves for summer entertaining?

Whether you’re planning a party at home or headed to the beach, pick-up entertaining essentials like serve ware, pool floats, towels and outdoor games. Opt for seasonal towels with bright colors or patterns that match your backyard décor, adding a fun element to your summer BBQ. I know you like to cook -- but who does the grilling?

I actually love to bake but my husband does all the grilling! He's the grill master. Just this past Saturday we made barbecue chicken, tri tip, sausages and shrimp! It was so delish and such an easy thing to do when entertaining.

Any go-to recipes that you and your family enjoy?

We have been loving everything from the What's Gaby Cooking cookbook! We made her dad's barbecue chicken the other day and my sister made the queso dip! It was so good!

What are some of your most coveted beauty secrets, especially as summer rolls around?

The summer weather can really take a toll on your skin and hair. Whether you’re hopping on a plane or hitting the beach, I always stock up on essential beauty products to keep my skin and hair feeling hydrated and fresh. My go-to product is a great is tinted moisturizer with spf in it! It provides coverage for an even skin tone and protection from the sun!

For a fresh, low maintenance beauty look, opt for a creme blush for faint glow, waterproof mascara and bold nail polish. For long flights or road trips, toss a hydrating sheet mask in your makeup bag for on-the-go pampering. I’m always amazed at the surprising finds and ever-changing selection of products at Marshalls, especially in the beauty aisle!

How has your fitness and wellness routine changed since you welcomed Sonny?

I just don't have as much time to work out so when I do it needs to be quick. I have been doing a lot of spinning and a little hot yoga. I need a good sweat for me to feel like it was worthwhile. We also live up in the hills so when I can't make it to the gym, I take Sonny on long walks and I break a sweat.

Have you traveled with Sonny? What are 5 must-have carry-on items for all families traveling with infants?

Yes, I have traveled with Sonny! We recently took him on a road trip to San Francisco. When I think of summer vacation, quality time with family, relaxation and long walks are just a few things that come to mind. To ensure I’m prepared for anything, I like to pick versatile pieces that can take me from the car to the beach to a nice dinner with the family! I opt for denim shorts or on-trend embroidery for a stylish day-to-night look. I also throw in a great outdoor game that’ll keep my family entertained for hours once we arrive at our destination. A neck pillow for me and for Sonny to sit on on the plane, teething toys and crackers, and lots of bottles!

We don't know yet! We were thinking just a simple BBQ/pool party in our backyard with a small, intimate crew. But we don't have any set plans yet!
