Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will return $9 million worth of wedding gifts -- here's why

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are one of the most beloved couples in the world. So it's no surprise that when they got married on May 19, the newlyweds were bombarded with a shocking amount of wedding gifts.

But according to The Express, Harry and Meghan will reportedly return the $9.3 million worth of wedding gifts due to official guidelines.

"The fundamental principle governing the acceptance of gifts by Members of The Royal Family is that no gifts, including hospitality or services, should be accepted which would, or might appear to, place the Member of The Royal Family under any obligation to the donor."

According to the guidelines, gifts from businesses in the UK "should normally be declined," unless they're souvenirs from an official visit. And when it comes to personal gifts from strangers, the item "should be refused where there are concerns about the propriety or motives."

It's no surprise that the rules prevent brands from using the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for publicity. Given the "Meghan Markle effect" in recent months, we've seen items that the duchess has worn sell out immediately online.
