Princess Charlotte fends off new baby brother, makes royal history in total girl power move

April 23 may belong to the new royal baby, but there’s a bound to be a spring in his big sister’s step too.

That’s because Princess Charlotte, at the grand age of 2, has made history by being the first British royal princess to not lose her place in the line of succession upon the birth of a younger male sibling.

Traditionally, a female royal would be bypassed by a younger brother, which is why Prince Andrew and Prince Edward and their respective children are closer to the throne than Princess Anne, who is older.

But with the Succession to the Crown Act of 2013, male royals born on or after October 28, 2011 no longer take precedence over their older sisters. It’s a modern adjustment that’s already been put into practice, as two of the Duke of Gloucester’s young grandsons trail their big sisters.

Princess Charlotte, however, is the first princess to make the power play. She remains fourth in the line of succession, after grandfather Prince Charles, father Prince William, and older brother Prince George. The new baby, born at St. Mary’s in London Monday morning, will be fifth in line, knocking Prince Harry down a level.

Will the toddler — who turns 3 in May — ever become Queen? Well… At 69, Prince Charles is the oldest and longest-serving heir-apparent in royal history. If subsequent reigns follow Queen Elizabeth II’s record-breaking 66-year lead, or if Prince George fathers any children, her shot at the throne may be unlikely.

Still, one can never underestimate the appeal of bragging rights over a baby brother — or plain ol’ girl power.

1. PRINCE CHARLES

Better known as Princess Diana’s former husband and father to princes William and Harry, Prince Charles is the first in line to take over the throne as Queen E’s firstborn.

2. PRINCE WILLIAM

Not only did Prince William score Kate Middleton as his wife, but he has also snagged the second spot in the long line of heirs to the royal throne.

3. PRINCE GEORGE

He may be small, but the power Prince George wields as third heir to the throne is no joke. He and his squishy cheeks will make for a great king someday.

4. PRINCESS CHARLOTTE

At two years old, Princess Char is not only her Great Gan-Gan’s fourth successor, she’s also her mini-me. May she reign as long as Her Majesty, Great Gan Elizabeth

5. KATE MIDDLETON & PRINCE WILLIAM’S ROYAL BUN IN THE OVEN

Once the in utero royal makes his or her grand entrance to the British commonwealth in April, he or she will become the fifth in line to the throne.

6. PRINCE HARRY

He may have 30 years on his little princess niece, Charlotte, but age does not equate with privilege in this case. Because Prince William is Prince Charles’s eldest son, his progeny comes before Uncle Harry in the chain of royal command.

7. PRINCE ANDREW, DUKE OF YORK

As the second eldest son of Her Majesty and Prince Philip, Prince Andrew sits comfortably in the seventh spot in line.

8. PRINCESS BEATRICE OF YORK

Princess Bea’s claim to fame isn’t just that she’s eighth in line for the throne as Prince Andrew’s oldest daughter. She also reigns supreme as queen of the fascinator game.

9. PRINCESS EUGENIE

Although she comes after her big sister, Beatrice, in the line of succession, Princess Eugenie’s dazzling new engagement ring proves she’s totally up or the spoils of queendom.

10. PRINCE EDWARD, EARL OF WESSEX

As Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh’s youngest son, Prince Edward holds the tenth position in line for the throne.

11. JAMES, VISCOUNT SEVERN

And finally, rounding out the top 11 list of royal heirs is Prince Edward’s son, James, Viscount Severn. You’ve got some big shoes to fill, kid.
