Here are the most popular dog breeds of 2017

Updated

The American Kennel Club released its top dog breeds of 2017 on Thursday, and one breed continues to sit atop the rankings.

For the 27th year in a row, the ever-popular Labrador Retriever continues to be the most popular breed in the nation.

"The Labrador Retriever has its paws firmly planted in Americans’ hearts," AKC Executive Secretary Gina DiNardo said. "It’s such a versatile and family-friendly breed."

The Labrador has been sitting at No. 1 since 1991 when it knocked the Cocker Spaniel out of the top spot. As well as being the most popular breed in the nation, the Lab also reigns supreme in major U.S. cities like Boston, Chicago and Washington D.C.

Why do Americans love Labs so much? According to the AKC, Labs are known for their friendly and outgoing personalities. Not only are they the perfect family dog, they are also some of the most popular service dogs, search and rescue dogs and therapy dogs. Not to mention they're just way too adorable!

However, the Lab's No. 1 ranking is being threatened by one breed that just knocked the Beagle out of the top five for the first time in 20 years. Check out the slideshow above to see which breed is climbing in the rankings.
