GRAMMYs 2018: Best of beauty

For the first time since 1998, the annual Grammy Awards have landed back in New York City.

And as expected, music's biggest night out was matched with quite the plethora of beauty looks, mimicking all the glitz and glam the city has to offer. Hollywood took over the red carpet at the iconic Madison Square Garden, so we're revisiting some of the most gorgeous (and sometimes outlandish) looks of the night.

Janelle's Grammys glow was achieved by celeb makeup artist Jessica Smalls. "I wanted to give Janelle a timeless and current look at the same time, so I decided to give her a Twiggy 2018 vibe," she explained.

Here's how.

1. "we began prepping her skin the night before Grammys with Kiehl’s Turmeric & Cranberry Seed Energizing Radiance Mask to help brighten her skin's appearance. When I arrived to Janelle the next morning, she was already glowing, but I decided to take the glow to the next level by giving her a light 5-minute steam, and then massaging Kiehl’s Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate all over her face and along her neck, followed by Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream.  I then applied Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado around her eyes, using my ring finger, to keep that delicate area moisturized.”

2. “For a bold and sexy eye look, I applied Buxom Cosmetics Eyeshadow Bar Single Eyeshadow in shades Lingerie Lover, Haute Couture and LBD to her crease, using a soft blending brush. The powerfully-pigmented formula glides onto lids with a luxe, powder-to-silk feel. I then lined her water line with Buxom Cosmetics Hold The Line Waterproof Eyeliner in shade Ring My Bell and swept the Buxom Cosmetics Eyeshadow Bar Single Eyeshadow in shade Twilight Tryst on top to make the green pop. I finished with Eylure Luxe Silk “Trillion” false lashes and then applied a few individual lashes on the bottom for a “Twiggy” effect. To complete the look, I used Buxom Cosmetics Big Tease Plumping Mascara for instantly plumped, longer lashes.”

3. “Giving the moisturizer plenty of time to penetrate the skin, I then applied a pore minimizing primer all over her face using a synthetic brush. I then mixed Buxom Cosmetics Show Some Skin Weightless Foundation in shade In the Dark with the Buxom Cosmetics Divine Goddess Luminizer and using a damp sponge I applied all over Janelle’s face, starting by her nose and blending upwards and outwards.  Using my ring finger, I sparingly dabbed some Concealer under her eyes to brighten. I contoured her face, focusing on her cheeks, temples and forehead with Buxom Cosmetics Hot Escapes Bronzer in shade Maldives, which gives off the perfect sun-kissed color and flatters all skin tones. And to complete her face I applied a soft pink to the apples of her cheeks, with some Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream on top for a subtle glow.”

4. “Now that her eyes and skin are finished, I hydrated her lips with Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1, and filled them in slightly with the all-in-one plumping lip liner, Buxom Cosmetics Plumpline Lip Liner in shade Stealth. I finished the look with the ultimate plumping lip gloss, Buxom Cosmetics Full-On Lip Polish in shade Megan. The high-shine gloss tingles for a lusciously soft and seriously sexy pout. And a stunning red carpet look was born!”

Celebrity makeup artist Lisa Aharon helped Anna achieve her Grammys glow. Here's how:

1. To start off Anna’s skin prep, I used Vaseline® Intensive CareTM Essential Healing lotion, for deeply moisturized and healthy looking skin. It has a beautiful, subtle scent and melts into the skin without being greasy. For longevity and a perfect canvas, I used Tom Ford’s Foundation Primer mixed with Traceless Foundation. I like to buff the foundation into the skin with their Creme Foundation Brush, until it seemingly disappears and becomes one with the skin.

2. Brows are always next— our eyebrows act as a frame to the face so I like to groom them before shadow or anything else to see where I’m at.  On Anna, I used Chantecaille’s Waterproof Brow Definer in Oak Brown and finished them with Glossier’s Boy Brow in Brown.  It’s my new favorite combo for a defined full brow that still looks super natural.

3. My inspiration for Anna’s eyes came from her outfit - 90’s Cindy Crawford and Linda Evangelista kept coming to mind. I used a matte taupe in Tom Ford's Cocoa Mirage palette to create to shape and some depth in the crease and around the lash line. To make it more modern, I then blended a silver metallic shadow in 005 from Pat McGrath Labs over top. A Tarte gel liner with an angled brush was what I used to fill in the lash line on the top lid only.

4. Since the eyes were really the feature of Anna’s make up, I kept it strong with a couple coats of Chantecaille black mascara under Eylure Luxe Silk "Radiant" Lashes, the texture is super natural and they add drama without the weight. I trimmed the lashes to fit the length of the eye and then positioned them with a fine line of adhesive. I like to let the glue dry for about 30 seconds before attempting placement as they stick with ease and don’t slide around.

5. Anna’s got amazing bone structure so I don’t tend to do much contouring.  I do love a rosy blush on her though! I dusted Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush in Euphoric Vision onto the apples of the cheeks to achieve a healthy glow.

6. I used Charlotte Tilbury’s, Nude Kate with Hourglass's Dusty Rose Lipliner in Eden.  I love that neither are not too warm or cool and just look amazing with Anna’s skin tone. Setting the final look was done with Laura Mercier Translucent Powder and finishing with Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Ethereal Light.

Celebrity stylist, Brian Fisher for TRESemmé, created an ultra-chic bob for Julia. Here's how:

Step 1: Prep towel dried hair generously with the TRESemmé Repair & Protect 7 Pre-Styling Spray to protect hair from damage caused by hot tools and styling.

Step 2: Roughly blow dry to 50% dryness, tossing hair back and forth to find a natural center parting.

Step 3: Apply an egg-sized amount of the TRESemmé TRES Two Extra Hold Mousse to the crown to create a bit of volume.

Step 4: Blow dry hair in sections with a large paddle brush to smooth before tucking hair behind the ears to give a slight bend.

Step 5: Apply one pump of the TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Shine Serum to hands, rub them together and apply sparingly to the ends of hair.

Step 6: Use a round brush and blow dryer to give the ends a polished roll under.

Step 7: Spray the NEW TRESemmé Compressed Micro-Mist Hair Spray Hold Level 2: Smooth in quick bursts layer by layer from the nape of the neck to the crown to lock in the straight style and seal out humidity.

Step 8: Lastly, spray the NEW TRESemmé Compressed Micro-Mist Hair Spray Hold Level 2: Smooth directly onto a soft-bristled touch up brush to tame any flyways.

Bebe's sleek bob was achieved with the help of celeb stylist Ursula Stephen. Here's how:

1. To prep Bebe’s hair, I cocktailed TRESemmé Thick & Full Balm ($4.99) with Suave Avocado + Olive Oil Smoothing Leave-in Conditioner ($3.99) and distributed it throughout her hair before layering on Dove Style+Care Smooth and Shine Heat Protection Spray ($5.99). Bebe’s hair is super blonde, so I need to ensure I keep it hydrated and protect it against hot tools and dryer heat.

2. Once hair was prepped, I blew it out with my Dyson Supersonic dryer. I parted the hair into a deep part, then sprayed her entire head with TRESemmé Compressed Micro-Mist Hair Spray Level 2 Smooth ($4.99) before flat ironing it straight.

3. I then razor cut her hair into a choppy but versatile bob. Once it was the shape I liked, I brushed one side back behind her ear, and finished with a bit more hairspray to ensure the look stayed all night.” –Unilever Celebrity Stylist, Ursula Stephen

Celebrity stylist Yusef Williams wanted to create a "whimsical" style for Rihanna, who performed on the Grammys' stage. Read on below to see how to replicate her 'do:

1. I prepped her hair with the Biolage R.A.W. Frizz Control Styling Spray and then used the ghd air hairdryer ($199, ghdhair.com/us) to add some volume and then used the new ghd gold professional styler ($199, launching Feb. 1stto smooth out the root and get rid of flyaways.

2. Then I used the new ghd gold professional styler and ghd classic wave wand ($199, ghdhair.com/us) to create voluminous curls and waves. To set the curl, I used Matrix StyleLink Style Fixer, the Matrix StyleLink Airy Builder and the Matrix StyleLink Smooth Setter
