Will Meghan Markle go on Kate Middleton's strict wedding diet?

Updated

To prepare for her 2011 marriage to Prince William, Kate Middleton reportedly adhered to a strict diet plan to get in tip-top shape for the wedding of the century.

Reports reveal that the bride was "obsessed" with a popular diet called the "Dukan diet," -- though the Duchess never confirmed if she abided by the meal plan. With another royal wedding on the horizon, many are wondering if Meghan Markle might follow in Kate's footsteps.

The Dukan diet was created by French doctor and nutritionist Pierre Dukan over thirty years ago, but it started gaining traction in 2011. Like the popular keto diet, it is low carb and involves four phases: two for weight loss, and two for maintenance. Said experts to The Express, "It starts by calculating your 'true' weight, based on your age, weight loss history and other factors."

The diet involves an "attack" phase with pure protein, a "cruise" phase with protein and vegetables, a "consolidation" phase that adds in carbs and, lastly, "stabilization" phase that essentially means maintaining a healthy diet while implementing the "attack" method one day a week.

How long you remain in each phase depends on your end goal weight -- it's different for every patient, explains Dr. Dukan in his popular book. The diet has been found to cause weight loss quickly, because it sends the body into ketosis, a state of burning fat for energy when the body is lacking glucose.

"My diet is efficient," Dukan once said, "It's very quick, which encourages people, and it's simple."

However, the founder of the diet himself once expressed concerns regarding the duchess on the diet. In 2014, when she was pregnant with Princess Charlotte, Dukan voiced he thought Kate lost "too much" weight before the royal wedding. "At the beginning she had good cheeks. Now, she has no cheeks," he explained.

Other nutritionists have criticized Dr. Dukan's techniques, especially for the food groups omitted from the diet. Despite the backlash, the Dukan diet retains a large following.

It's not yet confirmed if Meghan will adopt her future sister-in-law's wedding diet -- but given her love for exercise and healthy eating, we have no doubt she'll be just fine -- with or without it.
