Melania Trump heads back to D.C. in coziest, yet chicest, way

Updated

When we think of winter outfits, we think of sweatpants, UGGs and a big fluffy hat to match. Melania proves otherwise.

After spending their Christmas and New Years at the Trump Mar-a-Logo resort in Palm Beach, Florida, the Trump family made their way back to the White House.

Even the frigid, winter temperatures of Washington DC (at 20 degrees, ahem) caught up with Melania Trump, who was spotted deplaning Air Force One in a cozy -- and of course, chic -- winter outfit.

The first lady took airplane travel to the next level in a tan breasted peacoat, turtleneck and pair of maroon leather pants by Helmut Lang. To polish off her travel look, she sported a matching maroon Birkin tote and Louboutin stilettos as she made her way across the White House lawn.

The beloved designer's stretchy leggings come with a hefty $550 price tag. Though Melania's been spotted wearing a handful of more affordable brands later this year, the leggings are only one of the many costly outfits from this particular trip.

For her family's New Year's Eve celebration, FLOTUS donned a blush sequined designer dress by ERTEM which retailed for $5500.

Many have noticed that Melania has recently veered away from more luxury designers, opting for more affordable brands like J. Crew. This "fashion sweet spot" can be interpreted as a political move, sending a message to America.

"Michelle Obama became famous for her appreciation of Target and J. Crew fashion during her time as first lady. Obama used fashion to appear as an accessible yet aspirational 'mom-in-chief' — a look that Melania Trump seems to be adopting herself," wrote Kate Taylor from Business Insider.

Lang's leggings seem to hit that "fashion sweet spot" Melania's been aiming for. Not J. Crew, but not a $51,000 Dolce & Gabbana jacket like she wore in Italy, the leggings may be a perfect balance.
