2017 year wrap up: Biggest food trends of the year

This year was a dream for foodies from all over the globe.

From the most Instagrammable menus -- looking at you, unicorn frappucino -- to Amazon's takeover of Whole Foods, Oreo's new mystery flavor, Snicker's release of three additional candy bars, Hooter's expansion to include male waiters and Lucky Charm's marshmallow-only cereal, 2017 was the year for foodies.

Top 3 wildest food trends:

The Unicorn Frap

The unicorn frappuccino at Starbucks proved to the world that Instagramming a colorful and pretty pink drink never goes out of style.

Back when the beloved drink was released in April, we wrote:

"The whimsical drink is made with a "sweet dusting of pink powder, blended into a crème Frappuccino with mango syrup and layered with a pleasantly sour blue drizzle," all topped off with vanilla whipped cream and a sprinkle of sweet pink and sour blue powder topping."

In the end, we compared the drink to a ring pop. "Needless to say, it seems that no one here enjoyed tasting this rainbow," AOL concluded.

Flamin' Hot Mac & @Cheetos at Burger King

Our favorite fast food chains, too, led the chain of command with its introduction of new and intriguing menu items. Burger King took the already unholy union of macaroni & cheese Cheetos and upped the ante to create Flamin’ Hot Mac ’n Cheetos.

In consumer news, "The Cheetos brand understands the snack business on the deepest level, and our expertise at Burger King restaurants is to satisfy guests' cravings."

The industry called it a triple threat to include crispy Cheetos, the fast food brand and mac and cheese. It only lasted for a limited time.

McDonald's Frork

Both amazing and "uselessly useful" the utensil made headlines in May -- it's a fork with french fries as its prongs.

However, it was deemed "ludicrous" and "infuriatingly stupid" by some.

It seemed like every chain was doing what it could to bring the buzz and draw in all kinds of consumers, whether that included a revamping of classic favorites to initiating new and exciting limited edition menu items. If this year was any indication of where the food industry is heading, then we're hungry for you, 2018.
