Jessica Simpson sparks criticism over photo of 5-year-old daughter wearing makeup

Updated

Judging by the many photos that she posts of her two young children, Jessica Simpson is one proud momma! But a recent photo with her 5-year-old daughter Maxwell is garnering major criticism on Instagram.

The 37-year-old pop star shared a photo of herself and her daughter inside a MAC store pouting their lips for a mirror selfie. Maxwell, who picked out her own lipstick shade, is seen wearing a dramatic, merlot-hued color.

"This is NOT an #ad, is my daughter's favorite store! Mommy-Daughter Day with #MAXIDREW #girlygoth," Simpson wrote in the caption.

But the mother-daughter photo sparked eyebrow-raising remarks from her fans, who claimed her daughter was "too little" to be putting on makeup.

"Her favorite store?? OMG. She should be playing outside or learning about the world not sitting in a chair putting on make up at MAC. What's wrong with you," one Instagram user wrote.

"How about taking your daughter some were fun were she can be a little girl. Instead of being brain washed that she need makeup to look pretty," said another.

This isn't the first time Simpson has shared a photo of her daughter wearing makeup. In 2014, she posted a snapshot of her young daughter wearing her lipgloss after the then-toddler raided her mother's makeup cabinet.

Simpson was also the subject of controversy on Halloween when some fans became overly upset by the fact that she dyed her daughter's blonde locks a dark brown for her princess costume.

A source close to Simpson came to her defense and assured anyone who is concerned that Maxwell is still a blonde.

"It was a spray in color for her costume," a source told US Weekly.
