Fixer Upper's Chip and Joanna Gaines talk hot paints, home value and the one 100-year home decor trend they love

Updated

One of the first questions Joanna Gaines asks each one of her clients when she begins a project is "What do you want your space to feel like?" Should it feel like a retreat? A source of inspiration? A place to host family and friends?

All of the above? For the Gaines, paint has the ability to make or break these sentiments. Whether it's a bold yellow or soft beige, paint helps exude emotion -- it's one of the most important parts of a renovation.

HGTV's star "Fixer Upper" couple has long dibbled and dabbled in the world of design. After Joanna launched her initial premium paint collection with Kilz in 2016 -- packed with 150 timeless colors -- the world begged for more from the design duo.

Says Chip, paint, along with "front elevation, landscape, slight modifications to the mailbox" can seriously up the value of a home. "If you've got a few thousand dollars, it may be a small budget, I'd really spend that money in front elevation."

Jo, on the other hand, would use that tiny budget to update "hardware, light fixtures, painting a room or a really big entry" to catch the eye of hopeful buyers.

Not only walls, but the colors of furniture, cabinets and statement pieces are imperative to the upkeep of the aura of a home.

That's the message the Gaines are trying to send with their new line of Chalk Style Paint: Take that antique bed mantel you'd like to restore or those new kitchen cabinets you'd like to shake up. Filled with 44 colors, the Chalk Line makes any home renovation project easy and manageable, due to its smooth application and superior coverage.

Especially in the business of flipping old houses, many of which are poorly maintained, the built-in primer of the Chalk paint helps make sure the job gets done and gets done right.

One color aesthetic Joanna's looking forward to in the spring? Greens on greens. From front doors to bathroom drawers to accent walls, it's about to be everywhere. Though, as the Gaines maintain, not every homeowner will agree on a color like their green "Weekend" nor design.

"Jo's amazing at [balancing different tastes]," explained Chip. "She's like a psychiatrist of design because she can talk to people and draw out these passions they both have and figure out how to mend those together."

Maintained Joanna, "I always tell clients to do their list of 10, and we try to somehow marry that. Of course, life is always about finding that middle ground and letting them both have a win. The creative part is blending both of those. You know, one's really rustic, one's really modern, I don't feel like there is any style that doesn't go well together...I just think it's that creative challenge."

That's not to say Jo and Chip agree on everything. Laminate floors? Forget it. Chip's a self-proclaimed "wood snob," and would rather opt for real floors, but Joanna believes laminate wood has come so far. "For people on a budget," she said, "it's an amazing thing to use."

When it comes to shiplap, both Chip and Jo love the aesthetic. "It's been in houses for over 100 years, so for anything that's a classic material you can keep for as long as you want," maintained Joanna.

The beloved home improvement show is (sadly) ending after this season, but if there's anything the Gaines family is looking forward to, it's the new year. When asked to choose one word to describe their upcoming adventure, the two joked "sleep" -- but then offered "inspiration" (Chip) and "spontaneity" (Joanna) as their backups.

"I really want 2018 to be inspired. I think with Jo and I -- and I'm sure everyone feels this way -- after you've done something for a few years, I don't like to feel like I'm in a box or in a rut. So I really want 2018 to be a year of fresh, new inspiration," Chip concluded.
