Justin Trudeau makes us swoon with unlimited maternity leave offer to pregnant cabinet member

The Canadian prime minister expressed strong support for Karina Gould, his Minister of Democratic Institutions, and a soon-to-be mom.

He speaks fluent French. He explains quantum computing. He boxes. He pushes strollers in gay pride parades. He has a flair for fashionably flamboyant socks.

There are plenty of reasons to love Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, but the swoon-worthy world leader just gave us the best one yet: His remarkable support for Karina Gould, his Minister of Democratic Institutions, and a soon-to-be mom.

Gould made history when she announced her pregnancy on Twitter on Sept. 5. She’s the first woman to be pregnant while serving in a cabinet position, and not just in Canada—in any North American government. (Yep, it’s never happened in the United States.)

Speaking Tuesday evening on stage at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women summit, Trudeau acknowledged it’s a unique situation.

“She’s going to have a baby in the spring, it’s hugely amazing, but what do we do about maternity leave? This is the first minister in Canada and maybe one of the first in Western democracies to be having a kid,” he said.

Canada has no policy regarding paid family leave for cabinet members, but Trudeau said he’s working on creating one—and it should come as no surprise that Trudeau, an outspoken feminist, is letting Gould take the lead in crafting a leave that works for her.

“We’re giving her as many as we can figure out that we need to, and as many as she wants, like we don’t know! We’re writing this, but we’re writing it together with her, and she gets to help define it, and hopefully we’ll get to show that it’s possible to be a minister and a mom, and everything, according to your own choices.”

Let’s just take a minute to appreciate that last sentence one more time. Hopefully we’ll get to show that it’s possible to be a minister and a mom. Is Trudeau trying to make working moms everywhere swoon? No wonder even the unflappable Duchess of Cambridge and Ivanka Trump fell under his spell.

It’s just one more way he’s shown support for women. His cabinet is already remarkable for another first: an equal number of men and women. He also explained at the Most Powerful Women summit how he actively recruited and encouraged women to join his cabinet, and that the newfound parity is forcing the world of politics to change—and that’s a good thing.

“Now that we have a cabinet, and a government, and quite frankly, a party with all these great, strong, young women, the challenge we have is, despite all their presence, we’re still very much in an old-fashioned man’s game of politics,” he continued. “And we’re having to look at how we change things in the workplace.”
