Gucci is officially going fur-free for 2018

Updated

This week, Gucci announced that the brand will officially go fur-free for the coming year.

The Italian-luxury designer announced their commitment to animal rights with an announcement Wednesday. "Being socially responsible is one of Gucci's core values, and we will continue to strive to do better for the environment and animals," said Gucci CEO Marco Bizzarri on Wednesday, according to CNN.

The ban will be applied to any "animal bred or caught for their fur," including mink, racoon and fox. Not only is using fur unethical, but it's "not modern," believes Bizzarri.

"Do you think using furs today is still modern? I don't think it's still modern and that's the reason why we decided not to do that. It's a little bit out-dated," he said to BoF in London.

Joining the ranks of other powerhouses who have denounced fur -- such as Stella McCartney, Armani and Calvin Klein -- Gucci hopes to work with various groups, such as the Humane Society, to organize the fur ban. The ban will begin with their 2018 -- any unsold fur items are to be auctioned off to charity.

Said Bizzarri, "With the help of HSUS (Humane Society of the United States) and LAV (an Italian animal rights organization), Gucci is excited to take this next step and hopes it will help inspire innovation and raise awareness, changing the luxury fashion industry for the better.
