NYFW: Marchesa continues its fairytale with stunning Japan-inspired Spring 2018 collection

The fairytale continues for Marchesa into Spring 2018.

The line's co-founders, Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig, brought Japanese gardens to life on Wednesday afternoon at New York Fashion Week, where their ethereal, feminine and pearl-strewn new collection debuted.

"We were inspired by a rather amazing Edwardian adventurer called Aimee Crocker, who wrote a very interesting book we were reading," Chapman and Craig told us backstage before the show. "She was just very fearless and obsessed with the East. She did a lot of traveling there, and we particularly focused on her travels in Japan and you’ll see little nods of that in the collection."

Those nods came in the form of kimono-style sleeves, Japanese-inspired threadwork and floral designs that harkened back to Japanese culture. Crocker also never went anywhere without her pearls, which is why the designers decided to include so many layered strings of pearls in their new collection.

Though they are using a new source of inspiration, Chapman and Craig haven't lost their core sensibility: They want to create feminine clothing that will make women feel empowered, timeless and special.

"With this collection, you’ll see that we see our brand as this continuing fairytale from season-to-season, so the clothes always feel timeless," they explained to AOL Lifestyle. "We want our pieces to be keepsakes that never go out of season. There are things that women want to keep forever."

Their desire to lift all women up with their designs comes at a time of major social and political instability and uncertainty, and they want their clothing to provide a dream-like escape from that oftentimes harsh reality.

"We believe in dressing women for empowerment," Chapman explained. "We llove when a woman puts on one of our dresses, and she feels her most beautiful. You see the look on her face when she puts a dress on that’s right for her, and that’s a special thing for a woman -- to find that confidence from that moment of fantasy and escapism. We all love to dream, so whatever is going on in the reality of the world -- which is very real at the moment -- to have that moment to dream is okay."

And after seeing the new Marchesa collection today, we're still dreaming.

Hair design for Marchesa's Spring 2018 was done by Moroccanoil Global Ambassador Antonio Corral Calero.
