NYFW: Cushnie et Ochs and a Frida Kahlo-inspired collection make a statement for Spring 2018

Cushnie et Ochs is often known for their sexy yet simple designs: Modern tight dresses, revealing cutouts or crops, one-shoulder ensembles often glaze their runways season after season. For the most part, this recognizable and sensual pattern remained true for their Spring 2018 collection, but they added a touch more flair with some artistic inspiration by Frida Kahlo.

The designers looked to the artist who was as empowered as she was unapologetic. "You know, a strong, powerful female figure who's kind of always in our wheelhouse... [The woman they've designed for is] an empowered woman. She definitely is self-assured, unapologetic, definitely comfortable in her own skin, and in a way, wants to have it all," the designers said to InStyle.

The Kahlo-inspired season was danced upon with some colorful stylistic switches. Sleek multi-colored gowns hung adoringly on models, entrancing the audience with with splashes of watercolor patterns. Spicing up simple LBDs, the designers included vibrant patchworks of florals, reminiscent of the renowned Mexican artist's bold portraits and style.

The chromatic additions didn't stop at the clothes. Debuting their first-ever shoe collection, the designers showcased boots to heels, all of which were reminiscent of similar Kahlo-inspired details. Incredible floral textures lined the front of thigh-high black mesh boots, which withered along as the models flew down the runway.

For Cushnie et Ochs, the new ready-to-wear collection definitely speaks to the empowered female.
