This train trip is the stuff of fall-foliage dreams (and it only costs $53)

Among the fall season’s finer attributes (see: apple picking, ankle boots, pumpkin carving), the colorful show of fall foliage might be the crème de la crème. And there’s no better place to catch it than in the Adirondack Mountains.

While you could plan a leaf-peepin’ road trip (alongside the other fall rubberneckers), there’s a much more relaxing way to watch the show: from Amtrak’s Great Dome car.

Starting in late September and running for a limited span of six weeks, the Adirondack route (from New York City to Albany to Montreal) will include its vintage “dome car” starting in Albany (built in 1955 and one of the last of its kind). What makes it so special? The dome-like walls and ceilings are entirely made of glass, making for truly panoramic views of the route’s red- and orange-blanketed mountains and majestic lakes.

And the best part? Fares start at just $53. If you’re looking for an epic (and stress-free) fall getaway, this is, well, just the ticket.
